Foxtails are essentially a bunch of calyces stacked on top of each other to comprise an oddly-shaped bud formation. Buds that foxtail are not exactly detrimental, but they are not exactly beneficial either. The most glaring setback is that it breaks up the structure of the herb

Thanks for the info. Ill look into it a bit further. I take it its down to too much nitrogen from what ive read so far. Someone mentioned about nitrogen forcing a flowering plant back onto veg i was just a bit concerned this could habe been an early sign of that.

Looks like how my autoflower (first-time) Banana Kush is growing. The word “larfy” came to mind (is this what that means?- heard the term here first).
I thought foxtailing was when it grew like a “head” of wheat, with calyxes doing sort-of a overlapping upward climb but just in pairs. Must be something else- had that happen to a few flowers last year.
Here’s what my autos looks like, fresh after finally trimming. The second pic, with the hairy mass of bud is particularly “foxtailed”.

The "wheat" term kind of describes them well but thwy are coming out of other buds. Larf is the stuff at the bottom i believe, that doesnt really form into a bud.

Probably just genetics or mutation. As long as you get enough airflow and trichomes form, I imagine it will be fine. Not so sure I would trim really though if the plant seems sensitive.
Did it flower outside of a 12/12 cycle?

No its been fine up until i over nitrogen fed. Think ive got back on track now with Just over 2 weeks left of what i anticipated but if it doesnt look ready i will give another week

Maybe that’s my issue, too! But, meh, healthy enough and I think I only have a couple weeks left on the one, too.
GG4 buds I grew last year that foxtailed were harvested a little early due to weather concerns but were still trich-heavy and potent- just really airy and almost velvety to the touch- I almost expected seeds in some the way the calyxes were swollen up.

Yes nitrogen excess will cause foxtailing.

This entire plant was one giant foxtail mess. I didn't even want to bother finishing it and it was binned shortly after this. It was constantly borderline nitrogen toxic even on a low feed. I chalked up this loss to shitty auto genetics.
