never grown before and need advice

ok so here is what i have
1 x homebox xl 1.2 x 1.2 x 2m
1 x 600w hps grow light (ballast incl)
1 x carbon fan kit

as this is my first grow i want to start basic and small but its always nice to get good results first time around, which is what i need your help for.

i have 4 plants 1 is 3", 1 is 5" 1 is 9" and the other is 12".
i have grown them all at the window so far as i have only just got the grow tent.

they are all in soil, but to be more spacific its miracle gro, and i have also got some baby bio which im yet to use.

i need to know how often to water the plants,

what and when to feed them

it is a good idea to occasionally spray water on them for hydration?

what light system do i use? is it 20 light 4 dark and then in blossom 12-12? if so when do i change?

also is there anything extra i can do to keep the smell down as a friend has a plant from the same seeds which is now 2-3ft and starting to have a slight smell.

what temp do i look for in this size tent? how far does the light need to be from the plants? as i know they get hot.

is there anything else i should know before i start growing?

i know there is a lot of questions here but its best to ask now instead of having a large number fo posts with different questions.

The best advice I could give you is to read the faq's and the stickies.Look around the forums and absorb the knowledge from people who grow and all there different ways of doing it.Everyone has there own ways and noones is better. Listen more to people who give you there opinion based on what they actually do in there grow and less to the ones that tell you there is only there way and every other way sucks. You'll find the latter are only wanna be growers. But the most important thing to remember is there a pretty hardy plant and easy to grow.
If your growing in soil you may want to check out the organics forum. I'm not going to bash MG but I build a good soil and add what the plant will need and let the soil do it's job and nourish the plant.
I think misting is criticle for youe vegging plants.
For lighting in veg people use anything from 18/6 to 24/7.I veg with CFL's and flower with HPS so I don't know what it's like to veg with HPS. I know people do it though.
As for watering I water mine well once they get kinda dry. I do not water them until it runs out of the pots because that's wasting the goodies in my soil.
