Need some super simple outdoor soil mix ideas, ASAP!!

Looking for a super simple low budget outdoor northern/bay area CA soil mix (or pre-made bag mix) that I will not have to add much nutrients too throughout grow cycle. If you have had good luck with the mix and add nutrients please let me know what and when you added.

Don't know if it matters but I am keeping them in pots, using 10gal pots as I need to be able to move them around.

Many Thanks!!!

I just dig holes and use regular roots organic and have fantastic results.

Look up subcools super soil mix if you want to go as far as mixing in other ingredients.

Subcools mix is awesome but if you're looking for simple (cheap) and still effective there are better choices, especially since the super soil calls for you to bake it for about a month before use. But with stuff you can get from lowes or home depot here's the most simple mix that still work very well but are super easy on the pocket book:
Classic soil-based mix

  • 1/3 mature compost or leaf mold, screened
  • 1/3 garden topsoil
  • 1/3 sharp sand (use perlite instead, better drainage)
Note: This mix is heavier than modern peat mixes, but still has good drainage. Compost promotes a healthy soil mix that can reduce root diseases. Vermiculite or perlite can be used instead of sand. Organic fertilizer can be added to this base.
I'm also going to link you here to a site that has a ton of recipes for soil mixes approved for certified organic production. The info is from the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service:

Yeah I have read SubCools mix which is for sure a nice blend but I don't have time to cook it and can not seem to find all the right ingredients. Thanks RDGgreenthumb I will check out that link. I am thinking of just rolling with the Roots Organic mix as I have found a place real local that carries it for a decent price.

Peat Moss. Native Soil. Blood Meal. Bone Meal (Or replace blood and bone with another source of Nitrogen and Phosphorus) 45% Peat/45% Native/5% Nitrogen/5% Phosphorus. Cheapest I've found. That's what I've used in the past, I'm not saying it's the best, but I got 6-7 ft tall, 3-4 ft wide plants before Choppers took 'em. Oh, and big holes. That's pretty key. It may be that the topsoil in my area is quite fertile, but from what I hear Briar and thornbushes grow where the land has been pretty much raped of nutrients.

%'s may be off, just implying to use equal amounts of peat and native/ nitrogen and phosphorus

Just realized you said you were using pots, in either case this mix is nice..just easier to achieve when you're removing the native soil from the same spot you'll later be filling.

I remember this old OG pic of this guys place like in Brazil with this beautiful in-ground pool with these huge like 25 gal pots with the most perfect Christmas Tree Shapes!

I went with the Roots Organic, so far really happy with the soil and the plant growth. Got the soil pretty cheap as well. Used the 10gal smart pots. Thanks for the info all

Maxsea for sure...They have a 16-16-16 and 3-20-20 formula. No hormones just a pure organic slice of heaven. I Used it first hand but my next grow I am definately trying "Roots". Anyone else for Maxsea?

Rushing a Grow is never a good thing...
But maybe this might help.
ROOTS ORGANIC POTTING MIX + LOCAL or store bought EARTHWORM CASTINGS + PERLITE for your VEG... mean while, let your SUBCOOL SUPERSOIL cook.
I have posted a thread here in OUTDOOR of a possible 2011 Supersoil mix and was hoping to get feedback on it,
There is another option for the HUMIC ACID I was thinking of using is ANCIENT FORREST by GENERAL HYDROPONIC and mix it into the SUPERSOIL instead of 2 TBL spoons of powdered Humic Acid... any comments on that would help.
Thanks

Bone and blood meal attract animals. They will dig up your plants. Don't ever use blood meal!

Your problem is that you want to make dirt you already have, better. Sorry to say this but dirt is dirt. Don't matter how much you throw in shitty dirt. it's still shitty dirt. You will have to just hoof it and go to the store and get a huge fucking bag of potting soil. It's only like ten bucks. And for a plant that will eventually fetch you $1000 I would say it's worth it.

So stop whining and go to Wal-Mart and get your soil. Your plants will love you, and you will love your plants.

That is so sweet, I just thought of that... (mumbling....jibberish...yada yada yada)

I'm not looking to use the native soil as I am putting them in pots not in the ground. Also have/had no problem spending to get the right soil I just was looking to start out with something that would be more organic and hold nutrients as well as drain well since I am using pots. Last I checked this was a form for individual to share what works, what they have learned, to aid others, no whining just questions. So stop your bitching and by the way who goes to Walmart to by quality anything let alone soil.

Further I am a cancer patient, so I see you are selling your grow for profit. Mine goes to me for medical.

if your from the bay, u can get fox farms ocean forest for like 11 bucks doesnt get cheaper than that and its the best soil imo

also i reuse old soil when iam out and i just add a teaspoon per gallon of fox farms marine cuisune, a mix of great shits that will revive old depleted soil, + you can use with coco and a lot of other things, it has everything in it, check it out
