Need some help with exhaust, intake, and carbon filter

I'm a tad confused on this matter. I am trying to keep odor down in my basement closet, but I can't run any ducts. If you guys can just tell me if this setup would work, that would be fantastic.

First off, I'm guessing this : http://htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=48436 is the kind of fan I would want. So, I buy two of those fans and make a carbon filter out of one of them. The carbon filter goes inside my closet, and filters all the stinky air inside, blowing out nice fresh air through the vents on my closet doors (or maybe I should cut holes on the bottom of the doors big enough for the fans?). Wonderful.

Now I place the second fan outside against the vent or hole in my door, and it will pull nice fresh air into my closet. Excellent.

1. Would this setup take care of the majority of my odor issues? And would it help keep the heat in the closet down at all?

2. Why do people run ducts outside there houses if this would work? I'm guessing it filters the air more?

3. Should I have a filter on the fan outside of my closet?

Thanks in advance.

ok first off think this.,
intake low and
exaust high (relative to hight of plants lights etc.)

what kind of light are you using, and how big is your room
and people vent outside or into their houses heating/ducting system becuase its alot more hot stinky carbon scrubbed air, like cooling 4 1000w hps or something right.

youll also need a circulation fan inside.
you want those temps below 85 for optimum growth
IMO that is

hope this helps
\ps if you havent already check out the DIY thread on carbon filters

I have a 4 inch fan made by that company and I have found it to be pretty weak. I would recommend getting a better fan. the growbright ones HTG sells look good. I bought the kind you're looking at to save money and it definitely hasn't been worth it for me, as that fan's not really powerful enough to pull through a carbon scrubber. The advantage of having venting to outside is you can control temps more easily,

You have it mostly well thought out. You only need one fan though. Cut a hole the size of your fan in the top of your closet door. Mount the fan. If it doesn't stay, you can use shelf hanging metal things to put a small shelf on the inside of your closet to support the fan's weight You really want to consider using ducting, even if it's just to control light leaks. If you get an eight inch fan, get the eight inch ducting and duct tape it around your fan on the inside of the closet. You can put your carbon filter in this ducting, right before the fan, Then put a bend or two in the ducting, and you'll control light leaks through the exhaust vent., and have a place to securely fit your carbon filter inside the closet. Finally, cut two eight inch intake holes. You can decide the best place to do this. The bottom of the closet door will work in a pinch, but then you're just exhausting hot air out into a room and pulling it back in later. Best would be to cut intake hole to the outside or to another room that will remain cool. Hope this helps.

Damn, thanks for the heads up. Googled that fan real quick and many other people also said it's way too weak for a carbon filter. I'll look into the grow bright ones and ducting. If I get one of those higher end fans and ducting, do you think this would take care of most or all of my odor?

Thanks buddy. Your post was extremely helpful.

i think so, a 400whps will grow some hefty buds so be prepared with a backupplan for odors. if you smoke it WHATCH OUT it makes it very difficult to detect minute traces outside your home....
play it safe, imagine getting pinched cause you got sniffed out!!!!
i think a high end fan or 2, or investing a little more $$ in a good ventilation system is well worth it in the end.
cheers good lck:bigjoint:
