Need fan help

Hey how's it growing?
My problem is I have no inline fan, and I have a 400 watt hps. I can't keep the door shut when light is on, even in the winter with the window open a few cracks. How the hell am I going to use it in the summer? Last summer I used cfl's and still couldn't close the door, so there's no way I can use the 400 without an inline fan.

I've been looking on E-bay for inline fans and found some pretty cheap ones.
I was wondering how much cfm's I need and how to use it.
I want to have it sucking out the hot air, but I don't know when I'll have to turn it on and for how long.

The dimentions for my closet is, 2'x2 1/2' by 8'.
Could someone let me know how much cfm's and the fan scheduel or if I should leave it on all the time.

Big REPS of useful info and personal props from me  :leaf:

A 4" 170CFM fan should be plenty with that light and space. I leave mine on constantly for two reasons: 1) plants need fresh air because they perspire a lot at night and 2) without the fan going, odor seeps from the grow area. You can run the fan how you want but that is what works for me.

I think you should look into LED lights

I was a little suspicious at 1st now I am glad I got it

The heat from the light is minimal, I actually added heater fans to bring up the temp in my cabinet

And very nice sugar coated nugets from them every 90 days

Plus they are better on the bills -way cheaper

I am using a 80 cfm inline on the intake and a 165 cfm with a carbon filter attached on the exhaust

Good luck

Just get the right type of inline fan. One like this: http://www.horticulturesource.com/ecoplus-ecoplus-8482-inline-fans-4-170-cfm-p1543/

Not one like this: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100073963&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=100073963&ci_src=14110944&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D26X-_-100073963&locStoreNum=4001&marketID=54

This is especially important if you are using a carbon filter, because an axial type fan like the duct booster doesn't generate as much static pressure.

Your room is 2x2.5x8, so about 40cf. A 170 cfm inline fan should be perfect. With no carbon filter, you'd exchange the air about every 15 seconds. With a carbon filter, maybe every 20-30 seconds. That should be enough to keep temps cool.

I have an LED, grow panel, they're fucking junk, a waste of money, I have it in a box in the basement.
I'd rather stick with the 400 switchable ballast, and get a real fan in there and not worry about whispy little nugs from cfl or led's
Thanks for your input though, much apprreciated.
Right on Duke, sounds good, that's the type of shit I wanna hear. +rep

I agree with Duke on the fan issue. I have one of the one from home depot and its fine for me but I am growing in a bigger space and using CFL's.

I would invest in a cool tube if. THis way the heat from your lights never get to your plants.
