Need cold weather help!

So here is the deal……..I’m building a small grow box that will be kept in my un-heated garage. In my neck of the woods, the fall and winter get pretty cold, often below freezing. During vegetative growth, the lights should keep the plants warm. However, once I go to 12/12 to flower, I’m concerned about the colder temps when the lights are off. Any suggestions on how to keep things warm in the grow box while the lights are off? Thanks in advance. :joint:

i think he means to divide it and have two areas with the light on at different times, so that the lights would be producing heat but the panda plastic will stop the light from leaking. Personally i think that might end up being a pain in the ass though.

if you're building a box and leaving it in an unheated garage during winter, you will still have temp. problems if you have proper ventillation set up. you would still need to draw in fresh air from outside the box, which would lower temps. inside regardless of what lights you have in there. you should definitely consider some kind of heater. and don't put your grow box on the concrete, as this will not help keep things warm either.

my grow is very similar. I have a 8'x4' by 8' tall grow room in my garage. Room is pushing 100 F right now, because the light is on till noon, and at 4 a.m it was 85 F. I know its about 95 F outside right now. It's only 11:30 a.m right now. N E WAYS I plan on using a kerosene heater this winter, and will also put a piece carpet down for my resevoir to set on.
This was recommended to me as opposed to electric heaters, which are a larger fire risk in a unoccupied(except for your plants of course) room. Also kerosene burning releases carbon dioxide for your plants.
hope this helps.

I'm thinking about using a heated seedling mat, with a thermosatic control, under my pots. With the use of a timer, the seedling mat will start once the lights go off. Do you think this would cause any problems with the plants?:joint:

if i remember corectly i think propane gives off much more co2 then karosene, but i may be wrong.

run your lights during the evening. this will help warm the room during the coldest time of the day/night. i used a "kerosun" kerosine heater last year. i too have a room within a garage. i burned the heater during the evening inside the main garage area. the flower room intake is inside so it drew in the warm co2 enriched air when he heater was placed by the intake vent. by moving the heater closer or further to the intake i could control how much of the heat it was sucking in. it worked GREAT!

the seedling mat sounds like it would help greatly... maybe running your lights on a bakwards sced.. like making your "high noon" middle of light time the middle of the night...

other things I would think of would be insulation on the grow box..
and where is your ventalation coming from... and going to...
if the air coming in is too cold.. your going to have a plant with cold leaves and warm roots... i dont think thats good..
but i think a heating mat wont hurt things.. just not sure if its going to be enough...
but thats my 2 cents on the matter...
good luck and keep us posted on how things go.. :joint::peace:

I would agree with what fdd2blk has to say...
i had a small "greenhouse" i built on a porch i had several years ago.. i used a kerosen heater to keep it warm.. and despite the lack of air in it in the morning... the plants seemed to love the low o2 atmosphere... not sure why.. as for people sleeping in a sealed room with a kerosen heater would kill us.. but the tomatoes and other garden seedlings i started in febuary near philiadelphia PA were 2 feet tall and ready to kick ass by mid march when the ground was just barley ready for planting... hmmm.. maybe this is what im going to do again..
thanx for making me think and i wish you luck with your grow :peace::joint:

I was thinking the same thing, I'll run the lights at night. The thermostat on the heating mat says you can either use the probe in the dirt or it can be used to measure air temp. I suspect if I measure air temp, I'll be ok. Also, it's a small space which will help.

Anyone know what is the minimum temp the plants can tolerate?:joint:
