Okay so i hate to be impatient but my plants ar almost ready to transplant and nobody is answering my previous post. I need to know if i should cut down a few trees around my spot so that i have mor light. The spot is shaded and gets partial sunlight 13 hours a day. Should i chop down trees so tht there is more direct sunlight? Or will i be fine?

That would be your call but the more sun the better . Last year I had a couple in a area similar there was a differance but they were still ok but I would go with more sun if it doesn't make them easier to find.

The spring Sun angle is the same as it will be for fall so instead of cutting them down you could either pull them to the side if small and pliable enough but if large old trees you may consider thinning out branches. If they are a real issue then slice n dice em. Most Emerald Triangle growers don't cut em down but thin em to add chopper disguise. Judge how many hours of light you will increase and if its minimal, pass.

There are no helicopters lookin for growers really in NJ but i think im guna chop some down because there branches are too high up for me to reach without a tall ladder. Thanks guys

Not sure thats worth it mate, I mean a tree takes 20, 30 years to grow. Your plant will be ancient history in 7 months. This early in the season you can take a cutting and or two and effectivly move your plant without losing anything more than a weeks growth or so. Be nice to nature and she will reward you.

ok ill play devil's advocate here.......cut that worthless tree down b/c weed can make $$$ and that tree cant, simple as that
So Mr Lorax ( Dr Suese reference anyone?) as much as I would like to debate this with you, i dont want to hi-jack this mans thread. Take a cutting from the plant and plant the cutting somewhere else. That way you double your harvest from that one plant and the tree lives. Seriuosly canna is a weed and WILL grow anywhere. And the cutting of the tree may draw unwanted attention to your plot. THAT is something you dont want.

Lol classic Dr Suese reference but to take a cutting do i just snip off a branch and plant it straight in the ground?

how about you leave your trees, take cutting like gypsy said, then find a sunnier spot. grow in both places and give us a report on the difference lol.

much easier said than done i know

Not quite ethat simple, but not real complicted. Remove the last three or so nodes of growth from a tip or the top if your not branchy yet. The original plant will grow, albeit bushier and perhaps a sidge slower for a while. The cutting should be transported to your new site in water, then cut away the branch of the last node to expose more inner branch, this is where your roots will grow from. Strip off some of the outer layer of the bottem and dip in rooting gel or clonex or whatever you have in your area. Make sure you stick it in soil that is very soft and will remain wet, the cutting needs to stay moist to root. Moist, not sopping. This by all means should be done at home where you can keep an eye on it untill it roots out well, but I have had quite a bit of sucsess cloning in the field. It all comes down to remaining moist .

In the fall I don't cut em but pull the branches with ropes to open up for Sun then release em afterwards.Cutting just brings about negative attention and growers have enough already.
