Need 4x cxb3070 CB or cxb3590 DD bin!

Hi RIU community,

I searched everywhere and didn't find anyone who sells cxb3070 or cxb3590 6500k in absolute top bin.
I asked jerry from kingbrite and others.

The reason why I'd like to buy only these bins is that I want to experiment on how low the absolute lower wattage limit is for plants to still grow, and I'd like to grow at >220lm/w (yes, they are that efficient at 10 watts per COB). First I want to try growing lettuce, so veg only, and from what I read 6500k should be ideal, the more blue the better.

Do you know someone or are you in possesion of a cxb3070 CB or cxb3590 DD bin?

I don't think they were released yet. You'll have to settle with 3070/BD or 3590/DB or wait:)

I see. But @REALSTYLES got them from Kingbrite I suppose. IDK why but Cree seems to send a limited number of top binned LEDs early after release and then to supply lower bins in large quantities. I don't think they were available anywhere since June.

Waffers yield less than 10% of chips qualifying into "top bin". All the rest of the wafer is used for mid/avg bins. Like a big bell curve.

Why 10%? Do they try to make top bin dies and they have 90% "failure" or what?
And it must be the same for veros...they do not bin their cob, but there must be some better than others! ?

It's not like the lower binned 90% are a failure, they are still really good! I guess when trying to manufacture huge leds like these, there are always tiny imperfections that affect efficacy. The less imperfections, the higher the bin.
And yes, I think there must be some better veros than others, even if they don't bin them.

I'm still looking around alibaba and other places, but no luck so far...

Guys do you think I could run 4 of them in a 2x series 2x parallel setup?
I know you should never run leds in parallel as a rule of thumb, but I thought maybe the cxb's would all have similar Vf.

Depends on how much current you want to pull through. You should be good as long as it doesn't exceed maximum rating (even the worst case scenario won't damage the LEDs). It also helps to measure the Vf of the COBs and choose the series in a way their Vf is as close as possible.

Cd is the best for 3500k.
It would be interesting to make a list of all the bin peoples can find from the lowest to the highest...

You can look up bins in the datasheet, here: cxb3590.

There are some bins not listed on there, but you can find them on a great comparison tool from Cree here.
They even list lm/w numbers at different currents.

So I found...AD/BB/BD/CB/CD/DB/DD.so I think AB is just before AB but there must be some under AB...
But I always lost about 2/3/5 step Mc adam elipse???? If I want 5000k which one is the best? 2/3/5?
And where are the DD chips? Who, except us, use top bin chip and what for?

You don't have to care about Mc Adam Ellipse, it's just a measure of color difference of leds in the same batch.
2-step: Every led has almost the same color. 5-step: You can see different shades of white if you compare one led to the other.

I think the plants don't care about color consistency (at least not at this low level).

The DD chips are almost impossible to find (currently there are none on the market...) :cry:

And how deep goes the light at this power?

Yeah jerry has some CXB3590 5000K, DB 72V in stock. I'm wondering if I should get 4 and drive the in 2x series 2x parralel...

@Supra: Can I ask why you prefer 5000K over 6500K? The chlorophyll a activity is highest in blue light, so in theory 6500K should be more effective, no?
