My weed is growing like an f'in weed!

Well, one plant is anyway, and I need some advice on how to control her.

I planted two Holy Smoke Nepali Rukum some time ago, and they made their way above soil on June 27. They were regular seeds, so no idea on sex. As time went by, one stretched tremendously even after topping after the 3rd node. The other was shorter and I wanted it to be the female.

But the tall, lanky one showed its sex in veg some days ago: female. The shorter one has not, but I believe it is male.

So what should I do now to control the vertical growth? Top again, at least on the two branches from the top node? Supercrop (not sure on this)? Lst?

Here's some pics, I'll let you guess which one I am talking about.

She was directly under 150w 4000k CMH until too tall. Now I keep most of her directly under the CMH, but not all. This happened only 2 days ago. Her "brother" (sex not sure, but I'm thinking male) has been under the same light but not as direct and has not stretched nearly as much. Note even close.

If it makes you smile males usually show first. Clone that top to save height.:leaf:

When those internodes start getting long and stretchy like the ones on the left, you can pinch. Just pinch the internodes, it will be a gentle smushing, not snapping sound. This inhibits verticals growth and promotes lower growth. It will also keep the plats shorter and stalkier because they won't have four inches in between leaves.

That's what I was hoping for. I saw what I thought was sex organs on the short one weeks ago, and nothing at all on the tall one. Now, I see definite female pre-flowers on the tall one, and the short one has what might be pollen sacs (some day). Only one per branch split on a node, but no hair coming out, and it appears to be a stem and ball (classic male).

Make sure you thought of the obvious things -- can you raise the light?, are the pots sitting on removable lifts?

If you are still vegging I would make the switch to 12/12 right away. Then I would cut back any branch or top that was
within 2 feet or so to the light. From pic #2 I'd say you need to remove the top 4 or 5 nodes. Coho was right on. Save the
tops as clones.

Good luck, BigSteve.

And not even in flower yet? Your aware it will double to triple in height? You got that kind of vertical space?
Yeah, that's what's fucked. I have vertical space for the shorter plant I wanted to be female, but I'll be pushing hard on the tall one if I flip even tomorrow. That's why I'm looking for solutions.

I think she finally quit stretching after 22 days of 12/12. Talk about a lanky plant!

You're gonna have difficulty finishing your plant with such a steep light fall off running through the body of it. I would suggest looking into scrogging. That plant looks like a prime candidate for the scrog. But it's a little too late now.

Plants also continue to stretch a little more as the buds mature. Sorry.

Ummm... is that solid core connected to... speaker wire?
Yes, 16-2. My local HD did not have the right size lamp wire when I was putting the lamps on my ballast. That ballast is not running right now, but the only real difference is the insulation. It is a 120v 110w fluorescent ballast.

I have side lighting I can switch on as necessary.

I moved my light up a few more inches about 3 days ago, she seems to have stopped vertical growth for the most part. All good, will be switching on side lighting soon.
