This is my secound crop. I'm posting this grow jernal in the hopes that I can help someone else, or is some one sees something I'm doing wrong, please feel free to give some advice. I'll try and update on a daily baises, and add pictures as soon as I get my camera fixed.
The purpose of this experiment is to try and single out the male plants before they are put into the growing room. By pre growing the plants in the propagation machine, I hope to be able to get them tall enough to see if the hairs on the stem are closed or open. Plants with crossed hairs will be discarded, and plants with hairs spread open will be kept for transplanting. Thinking of the hairs as legs, the rule of thumb is this: If the legs are crossed is a male. If the legs are spread open, it’s a female ready for breeding. We’ll see how true this stands.
DEC. 27- Trying new method of propagation. I am using a wick type system. A 3 gallon Rubbermaid storage bin with 12 starter holes in the lid. An air pump with 2 10” stones, and a Jr. heater for a 5 gallon aquarium. I used a plastic 9x13 cake pan lid for a cover. I filled the bin with approximately 2 gallons of water, and started the air pump. Put coco plugs in net pots and placed loosely in Rubbermaid lid. I took 4 cups of water out of the bin in a 4 cup measuring container. I placed the lid on the bin and saturated coco plugs with water from bin. Plugged in heater, and placed cover on lid. Water should be heated to around 70 degrees. I put 12 seeds in plain water to soak for 24hrs. After soaking the seeds I put them in a folded paper towel on a saucer, with another saucer on top for a lid. I then placed the saucer on a warm surface. (I use the top of my home entertainment amp. Works like a peach, but I suggest a heating pad.) I’ll wait till the tap roots are at least ¼” long before transferring to plugs.
DEC. 28- Water has heated to 70.3F/21.2C. Adjusted Ph in propagation unit to 6.0. Took out another 4 cups and soaked plugs again. I also added 2 drops of superthrive.
Tap roots have sprouted from seeds. Some are already ¼” long or longer, and some have just sprouted.
I installed a Saturn 2+2 florescent light above the unit. The Saturn 2+2 is a 2 foot, 2 bulb florescent light with 2200 Lumens at 34 watts.
DEC. 29- At 1400hrs. I started transplanting my sprouts to the growing cubes. I placed the cubes in 2” net pots, and put those in the lid. I set the dome on top of the lid, and programmed the timer to cycle on at 0800hrs tomorrow morning, and cycle off at 2300hrs. I’ll leave the lights off for about 18hrs. to give the roots time to recover from the shock of transplanting. (One of the seeds did not get presoaked. However, It did lay in the paper towel for about 24hrs.)
DEC. 30-The timer cycled on at 0800hrs. I take my readings between 2100 and 2200hrs. So all my readings will be based around those times, unless otherwise noted.
At 2200hrs the ambient air temperature was 76F/24.4C. The water temperature was 72.1F/22.3C. The Ph was at 8.0(added ¼ tsp. Ph-). There was noticeable growth in five of the plugs.
DEC. 31-Water temperature this morning at 0800hrs was 69.8F/21.0C.
JAN. 01-Water temperature at 0800hrs was 70.0F/21.1C. Ph was at 5.0. I added a little less then ¼ tsp of Ph+. Growth in all but 1 plug.
At 1200hrs the ambient air temperature was 75F/23.8C. The water temperature was 71.9F/22.1C, and the Ph was at 6.0. The seed that has not broken the surface yet is the one that did not get presoaked. I pulled the top of the plug back a little bit, and there is a tap root growing. (The tap root had not sprouted when I put the seed in the plug. I don’t generally practice this method.)
At 2100hrs. the air temperature under the dome was 75F/23.8C. The water temperature was 71.7F/22.0C. Seedlings are looking very good.
JAN. 02-At 0755hrs. The air temperature under the hood was 67F/19.4C. The water temperature was 70.5F/21.3C. I’ll take the rest of my readings and observations at 1100hrs.
At 1100hrs the air temperature was 77F/25C. The water temperature was 71F/21.7C. The Ph tested at 6.5. I added 10 drops Ph- to unit. Everything is looking well.
At 2100hrs the air temperature was 75F/23.8C. The water temperature was 71.7F/22.1C, and the Ph is back to 6.0. The twelfth plant has broken the surface and is beginning to stand up. All twelve plants are looking good. My water tested at 239 PPM
JAN. 03-At 1100hrs this morning the water temperature was 71.5F/21.9C. All the plants (12) are looking good. I removed the hood and lowered the light to 1 5/8” above the lid. The plants range between ¾”/1.9cm and 2”/5.08cm.
(E)-At 2130hrs the water temperature was 70.8F/21.6C, and the Ph was 6.0. The plants did not seem to be acting so well to the light being so close. I raised the light to 3” above the lid.
JAN.04-At 2200hrs the water temp was 72.1F/22.3C and the Ph was 6.0. I raised the light one link. It new height is 3 11/16”. All twelve plants are looking good .
