Squirt some superglue into the keyhole. Tell him you just wanted to make sure no one fucks with his box anymore.

Sounds like he needs to lay off whatever he's keeping in there.

i did that to my boss at work with his safe for april fools, he had this old beast of a steel safe and it was time for an upgrade.. real easy to break into and pick and all that shit.. so we stole his safe on april 1st and welded it shut lol.. best prank ever
