that's so beautiful! I'm ordering a banana tree today - a dwarf red. super, mega, ultra excited.

here's some random fact trivia about banana. seedless banana are all clones from the same plant, so it's almost as if everyone is eating the exact same banana. I like to refer to plural banana as banana for that reason. Also, the banana carried in stores is called the Cavendish, known as an inferior banana that is mass marketed solely because it preserves well.

Because banana are all the same plant, they are highly susceptible to disease, and the previous commercial banana (called the Gros Michel) was completely wiped out by Panama Disease in the 1950's. The same is going to happen to the Cavendish, and in fact already has happened in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Once that happens, the next candidate for commercialization will likely not appear like the typical, normal yellow banana people are used to eating but either the green, longer types of banana in the OP or the red, more fruity types of banana i'm ordering.

just learned about this in the last couple days when picking out what to order for my indoor garden.

Airant, the larger clump of Bananas in the photo is four years old and started as one 5' tall banana that a friend gave me.. I am guessing I planted it in the right spot ;-)

color me green with banana envy. mine arrives in about a week. hopefully if i put it in acidic soil like peat and coco and feed it some potassium-rich compost teas it'll flower for me in around a year. I don't know as I've ever eaten banana that wasn't cavendish, and it's like now that I know about it, I just can't continue living life knowing I've never eaten a quality banana before. lol It probably seems silly, but it feels significant to me in some strange way.

starting an indoor tropical exotic garden has already been extremely rewarding, it's probably the best idea that's struck me since I bought my PC.
