Stopped in to HD today and they still have 2 100 watt HPS lights for sale marked down to $34.00 Also some nice 40 watt flouro security lights marked at $29.00 They just can't seem to get rid of them. I hope they find a good home/grow closet soon. Does anyone else know if other HD's in the states still have deals like this. If not then I will stop posting and let this thread die.

My hd no longer has the 100w hps. Might just be a fluke though.
They now only sell the 70 watt HPS which looks identical to the 100 watt only it's 70 watt. That must be why they have the 100 watt on clearance. Guess johnny homeowner thinks 100 watts is too much light.

I think the stores have slightly different stock depending on what sells better where. It'd be pretty stupid if it didn't: Arizona homeowners don't need all the same things that Minnesota homeowners do.

Thanks Guys,
I painted myself into a corner this Feb. by cracking a bunch of UFO bagseeds a friend gave me along with my usual tomato, pepper, squash, herb seeds for my garden & ended up with 75% females & a cramped stairwell to grow them in. Oh ya... and no fancy HID's or any of the basic grow room supplies (+ zero dollars). Couldn't bear to chuck the girls out so I've got 'em crammed in there. Tried some spiral cfl's in round reflectors - PITA, so the Fluorex's have been working out good so far. Did a reverse Spectra-Max design by using grow-lux & warm white T12 bulbs on either side & my pole-vaulting girls have been growing some buds.
Being an unemployed artist, I didn't have much to work with, but I can tell you that these "security lights" beat the pants off lotsa small twist bulbs & all their extra wiring. A lot cheaper too, with replacement bulbs at HD around $15. After I get thru building my diy exhaust/carbon system, I'm going to strap 3 Fluorex's end to end on a 1x4 & use them for the main veg lights in my separate rack system.

Thanks edcocs - I know I'm not the only one who has browsed the "security light" sections at HD & WM & wondered if they could work for growing. I hope this thread has answered a few questions for the poor folks like me who can't do all their shopping at the local hydro store.
Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say...

Based on your pics you are as anal as me. My space looks is as clean and uniform as an aerospace research lab. All you need now is some white paint. Throw some Kilz on the walls. What did you pay for those security lights?

I got them from
Fluorex Super HO Flourescent Grow Light Hydroponics - eBay (item 330226815794 end time May-08-08 20:19:18 PDT)
The owner of Grow-A-Lot Hydro, Bryon, is the Obie-Wan-Kenobe of growing & the biggest source of information on cultivation I know. You can find them a little cheaper on other ebay stores, but I like to support people who provide honest opinions on products they use themselves.
Yup, got a gallon of Kilz - waiting for harvest time to fine tune the stairwell. I had a bad spider mite infestation on my orchids a few years ago that taught me about being anal with grow spaces.
I couldn't afford to buy a real exhaust/filter system so I DIY'ed a Ryoko carbon scrubber variation to deal with the heat/odor/exhaust problem & it's working out great. Don't know if it will handle a 400W hps tho - I'm really torn on building a ballast kit from scratch for around $150 or getting a 4' 4 tube T5 & not worring about heat. Seem to be leaning toward becoming a T5 grower because of some of the great harvests I've seen here & on ICMag.

Well, first, they weren't that expensive (2 for $72 inc ship), but my dream light is a 400w CMH in a SS Supersun2 hood. Growing in a triangular space forces all the heat up to the top of the room really fast, so the exhaust/temp situation has got to figure into the purchase of any HID light system. Plus it has to be quiet - I have clients & customers in my workshop/studio that would notice a hoover vaccum cleaner running full time in my closet. I'm waiting to hear some more reports on the S&P 4" Mixvent fans cause I know a vortex/canfan/elicent would be too loud for my situation. If it turns out that I can use the S&P 4", then CMH here we come!
Still... I have some great memories of my first shoplight closet grows from years ago, so I'm kinda sentimental about anything fluoro - i know the T5's can kick some real butt & are probably the perfect no-hassle lights for any apartment/stealth grower.

Yes, I'm putting together a "poor man's" grow journal as we speak, but I'm gonna take my 8 hillbilly bagseed girls thru flowering before I post (just in case I kill everything).
