My Growroom Plans

Take a look at my diagram to see what you think.

My main questions are: I will only have 4-6 plants under a 400 watt HID, could I use a carbon filter on the floor, inline fan, and ducting going near the ceiling to pump the warm stinky air back to the bottom of the room? I can't vent the air through holes since this will be at an apartment, can't cut holes. And I don't want to use a grow tent and vent the filtered air out of the tent since the tents are only certain dimensions. i want the freedom of my own dimensions in the closet.

I want to veg my plants as high as I can and then flower them so I have only enough leeway with the distance from the light, 18-22". How long should I veg the plants so they are tall but not too tall. The ceiling is about 8 feet tall in the closets I've seen in most apartments.

3rd: How bad could the smell get? Could it permeate through the walls to my neighbors unit?

Lastly, I cant cut holes, and can't use an extra ac unit. Will the temperature get too high if I am only running one 400 watt light, have oscillating fan, and use inline fan for carbon filter will the closet get too hot?

Well if you are going to do what you plan, dont waste your money on a carbon filter since you are not going to have a room containing the smell (ie a closet door will not keep the smell contained in the grow room). I would honestly consider getting a grow tent, because they are very easy to control light leaks (important during flower), and a little bit easier to keep the temps regulated, i have a 400 watt hps in a grow tent, hooked up to a 4inch inline fan, and the temps stay constant at 76-79. By the way, i would look at growing a strain that smells more fruity, to confuse the mj smell. Good Luck!

Ok I will get a grow tent then. I heard they don't help with the smell very much. But I'm pretty sure they have to.

The dimensions would be roughly 4'x4' what size ducting? 6" or 8"?

How would you recomend configuring the filter, and fan withthe tent?

Would the fan blow the air or suck the air out?

yeah a tent would be good for your situation. i dont really understand your question but it wont work very well to exhaust from the bottom of your room. you could just take the door off of your closet then hang a cloth or some plastic up in its place, and just cut the holes where you need them

Good idea with the plastic. But how should I route my inline fan? Fan-Duct-Go through plastic sheeting- duct - Carbon filter? Or sucking: Plastic sheeting-duct-fan-duct-carbon filter?

I'm probably going to also put an ozone generator in my living room and keep my dog in my bedroom away from the ozone generator. I may also use Ona Gel. I may just keep my dog at my significant other's place and live there most of the time since I don't want my dog taken away if I get caught.

you wanna pull the air not push it so hang your carbon filter at the top of your closet have the duct coming out of your closet with the fan on the end or somewhere in the midldle. or you could attatch the fan directly to to the filter and have the ducting going out the tent, but make sure you at least have the fan after the filter pulling air through it

Now there always must be an intake on a sealed tent or their would be a vacuum affect. So how does stinky air not go out the intake and/or the exhaust when the fans are not on? A butterfly valve? Butterfly valves on the intake and exhaust?

What about diameter of the ducting and fans?

6 inch ducting with a 6 inch inline fan will be plenty. (In my case i have 6 inch ducts with 4 inch inline fan, just because i havent gotten around to getting a 6 inch fan, actually found out that the 4 inch hydra farm fan can cool my my 400 watt hps just fine)

You would want the fan to be sucking the air out via the carbon filter, this will give you your best chance at reducing the most smell that you can.

Could I cool my light and run the filtration through one system with one fan?

Example: carbon filter-inline fan-duct-cooled reflector-duct to outside tent (or sealed closet with door off and plastic in place w/ hole for exhaust)

Unless you have air cooled reflectors yes!

Air which is being used for cooling a hot bulb should be "pushed" over the bulb not "pulled"

Then if the air over the bulb must be pushed then would it be okay to use a single fan to filter the air and cool the bulb: stinky in- carbon filter-blower-duct-reflector-duct-exhaust out?

ETA: it'd probably be a good idea to put a butterfly valve between the reflector and the duct going to the reflector so the how air won't go back into the carbon filter if i time the fan to go on and off. Should the fan stay on all the time to cool the bulb?

Yup that's pretty much the idea

There's 2 reasons why you push the air over the bulb, 1 is that you then don't have very hot air going through your fan and 2 pushed air is more efficient at cooling!

if your pushing air through your reflecter your going to have air leaks that glass is not air tight, you will be leaking hot air back into your grow room, and it wont work as efficiantly as pulling air. pulling is the way to go man just make sure the fan isnt right next to your light. ask around other people will tell you pulling air is better than pushing it. if you put your fan after your reflector you can leave the other end of the reflector open, then you can cool your light and exhaust your room at the same time. thats how i do it and it works great

i think using one duct line to cool your light and exhaust your room all in one step would work best for your situation that way you dont have to worry about to many duct lines coming out of your room. just leave an open space at the bottom of your door/plastic or whatever you put up for a passive intake

sk8disgruntled is correct; pulling air with fans is more efficient than pushing it.

-you WILL need odor control. most buds get pretty stinky in mid-late flowering. always better to be safe than sorry

-with a 400w light, youll want to keep your plants relatively short and bushy. if you grow tall plants, light that actually reaches the middle/bottom buds will be very weak. use techniques such as topping, LST, supercropping to maintain an even canopy for flowering.

-and yes the closet will get too hot with a 400w in there. I did a closet grow with a 400w and it raised temps to 90+ degrees in half my apartment. either find a way to exhaust the heat outside, or get a window AC unit. theyre ~$100
