My Fruit Cellar

Just a few cheesy pics to illustrate how great Midwest fruit cellars are.

Both lights spin high power CFLs via modified ceiling fans. 6400K on the left and 4100K on the right.

Poly doors for each side that open and close with the light in that area. Modified 48" roller blinds using step motors and logic.

Haven't done any ventilation yet... gonna try this first grow without...

Cool huh... If I calculate my actual area, it's exactly 420 cubic feet.

69 degrees F
30% RH
Green Air CD3 NG
Hanna multi monitor

Spinning lights you say??? Im interested! I was working on moving my lights with an oscilating fan! But this is a new level of fun!

And the 4100k isnt that the dead spot in the spectrum for canna?? Or is it in the middle of the two goos ones, again new thinking ...i like it!

Indeed... it's easy as pie if you think about it and tinker a bit. No instructions because the concept is simple, but implementations will vary wildly. use your imagination.
Spinning light ver 3 will employ 5 fan blades, each carrying 100 2 watt LEDs. Should be fantastic!

This may very well be true. I am a newbie.
Living and learning, but I'm almost dead-set on HPCFLs and LEDs.

Im along for the ride! I still think the l.e.d.s are off a bit they are just now learning what colors they need to emulate in order to get better..i think in a few years there will be better stronger leds avail. I read some nasa research regerding leds for growing but even they admit the led manufacturers dont have it right yet... I have also seen some pretty sorry looking plants under a ton of leds ... Right now cfl is where its at in my personal opinion:) a few more pics of the bulb locations and wiring would be great too! What allows the bulbs to spin and stay in contact with the power?? I know what it would take to do it but it would not be normal parts off a fan! ... Some sort of contacts running on a rail??

Here are a few pics of the lights. These are actually ver 2 and 3. ver 4 will be LED.

Ceiling fan parts... stripped all useless parts... completely re-wired to use only the lowest speed (roughly 60 RPM). Everything else was found/scavenged/pilfered from stuff around the house, except for the mogul bases. 3/4" copper pipe was used to make homemade "slip rings". The "brushes" came from an old vacuum cleaner on one, and a busted up hammer drill for the other. It's really low tech, and low budget, but I expect to get fabulous results. No shadows.

Now way i would say "low tech" i thinks its brilliant use of simple engineering !! I think its the first spinning light setup ive seen! The way you set up the armature and brushes is awesome! Plus the bulbs cool them selves! Man im jealous ...great work..do you get any flicker from the bulbs?? I guess if the contacts are clean your good..

I know a few people that are going to love this one!!

I have been running these for about 50 days with no flickering, no noise, and yes, the lamps run quite cool. Additionally, the fan blades lift a moderate amount of air through the plants to aid in CO2 dispersal. I'm thinking about turning off the oscillating fans in the room, to see if there is any notable difference. I suspect that there will be enough circulation to use only the lights.

Hola peeps... Been a while.
I'll report...
3 full cycles have passed, using only the CFL spinners you've seen, plus 1 more that is really sweet. I'll up a few pics, as well as a few pics of my latest results.
Can you say GDP? That's right, GDP. I found 1 seed in a single eighth...
1 seed
1 chance
1 success

1 proud Pappa

I am going to be honest...
By the time you add up the 5 CFLs plus the fan motor, these guys draw something over 400w each... Hmmm.
I have since decided that a few hundred more watts, and I'd be using the equivalent of two 600w HPS... Yeah... Hmmm.
So, I retired CFLSpinners v2 and v3, and put up a 600wHPS.
The results were unbelievable, as most of you already know.
I have since added a 1000w... LOL
In defense of the CFLs, every single OZ that ever saw them, was snatched up lightning fast, at 400 banannas each; and there were a bunch of Os.
The only real difference lies not so much in the quality, but the quantity, and weight. The CFL flowers, however sweet, were less dense, therefore lighter.
Still, it was always gone in a flash, and peeps were bummed in between...
So, CFL can grow wicked good medicine (I'm a State Licensed Caregiver), but to get anything close to the density that HPS affords, you probably have to run double the wattage in CFLs, and even then, the results may be lighter. I do not regret, however, the time and effort I spent giving them their shot.
