My first legitimate grow / Introduction to the board

Good evening good folks.

I have been reading here for a while now; or rather I have been directed here via google searches throughout the years. Anyhow, I have done a couple grows in the past, they were hidden style and I never really put that much into it and obtained what I would call good results.

Now here I am in Colorado with the time, energy, resources and.... an ENTIRE room to dedicate to my grow.

Overview:

I started with some kindly donated clones from a very reputable source. I'm growing them in a bedroom in my home. I am doing a soil grow that will veg under metal halide 24/7 until I switch to a HPS flowering bulb 12/12. I anticipate a 4 month grow as I am aiming to harvest 1 lb. of dried flower between all 4 plants.

What I got:
4 total plants.
- 2 Chemdawg 4
- 2 007 OG Kush

The girls came from a legitimate distributor here in Denver so I'm very confident in their exact genetics. Both being hybrids from similar lineage, I anticipate they should mature evenly throughout the grow. I received them fresh from the clone machine in Solo cups with a coco/soil mix.

I waited till I saw roots poking through the holes cut in the bottom of the cups and I was ready to transplant! I opted to go straight into the 7 gal. pots I intend on flowering in.... Several reasons...

1) I have the room
2) Transplanting always risks plant damage
3) I I was able to maximize root expansion quickly by soaking then letting the containers dry out almost, all but totally, completely for the first 2 waterings... The roots were peaking out of the containers drainage holes mid-week 3.

What I planted in:

- 7 gal. plastic containers, with drainage holes around the bottom, matching saucers.
- 50/50 mix of fox Farm Ocean Forest and Royal Gold Tupur. The Tupur (more coco based) seems to be a great cut for the FFOC to increase (soil) drainage.

What I was growing under...

1 - 400W MH "Blue bulb" via Hydrafarm magnetic ballast; But you know what? Light is addictive; So I picked up a brand new Solis-Tek 400/600/1000 watt MH/HPS convertible, digital ballast with awesome lumi2 hood... Now I was running 2 - 400 watt MH bulbs but the one looked so silly in the metal "wing" hood so I went and got the first hood a twin sister. I also wanted to build a light rack that was to my specs so I build a 5x5x5 cube (plus braces) out of 1" pvc pipe.

Nutes?

I planned on following the Fox Farm feeding schedule exactly but I hit the girls with a very mild mix a bit too early in the veg and I did sting the poor gals a bit. I flushed with ph'ed tap water and have been only been watering with that since. Based on how they look, I don't think I'll be adding anything else till I put them into flower in a few weeks. You can see my "real" first post on the forum about this here: https://www.rollitup.org/t/fox-farm-soil-feeding-schedule-way-too-strong.824056/#post-10428748

How things are doing:

I noticed a select number of what I believe to be spider mites on a couple of the plants last night. I mixed 1 tbs of Neem oil with a quarter gallon water this morning and sprayed away. I cleaned and sanitized the room and they seem to be responding very well.

Anyhow, Though I have an old magnetic HPS 1000, I plan on buying another of the Solis-Tek digital 1000s before I start to flower so everything matches. The ballasts even comes with a 10% overdrive feature that will allow me to hit the girls with 1100 watts x 2.

Misc:

- Fan blowing low 24/7
- Temp has stayed constant 74 - 79

Thoughts, critique, criticism and of course compliments, are eagerly welcome. I look forward to becoming an integral part of yalls board.

Nice. I always like to find a parallel grower to my time frame and style.

Spider mites are the devil. I would delay flowering inorder to use a systemic pesticide. Its nasty stuff but not in veg really. Then when you flower youll know for sure your bug free. I love neem for prevention for pm and bugs. But the gentler varieties of pestecide have never wonan infestation. Just my experience though. If i get bugs again and spot early ill be using the scariest shit they have.

Last time i got bugs though. In my old journal. I freaked out fucked shit up and ended up with 50% my average weight. So id say another bit of advise is dont trip on every creepy crawly you spot. I read somewhere that 95% of bugs dont even hurt our plants.

Thanks for the reply! Things are going well. I havent seen any new mite activity since last treatment a few days ago. Im sure there are still a hidden pocket or two of them on there. I will be treting with neem 2x more before the flowers onset. I plan on switching the girls over to 12/12 tonight. I setup a tent and switched to the 1000W HPS yesterday. Things look great, but for a lil, tiny tinge of nute burn Im seeing from Saturdays feeding. They will get straight water tomorrow when the lights come back on, then Ill cut back on the nutes just a bit on the next feeding.

Just a general question. Do you think a 600w hps is sufficient for flowering in a 5x5 tent? any advice would be awesome. thank you :)

Thanks guys! Other than there being an area of growth where the internodes really stretched; the Kola buds are startin to get nice n dense. I can't see any stem where there is bud; I just hope I didnt stretch the internodes too much to keep big, full, complete, picecone size kolas from forming?!?

What technique to hold the gals? lst?
I used bamboo sticks and gardening tape. I was super gun-shy on pruning before going into flowering so It's a bit of a mess down below (A lot of scraggly stems with small popcorn nugs). With these being as bushy as they were I just pushed everything up towards the light and garden taped around my bamboo stick structures.
