My first grow, What do you think? Couple of issues...

Thats fantastic DoeEyed those pics explain alot. Cant believe how much extra growth you get in just one week. Thanks for the explanation it makes sense now.

I seem to be having some issues today after switching to 20/4 last night. The leaves that I initially thought had nutrient burn on them seem to be getting worse and crispy. I have added some new pics to show this. Also some of the other leaves seem to be a little brown on the tips too.

I thought maybe this could be caused by my fan bowing directly on the leaves? could this be the issue or should I just leave things as they are and see how it goes?

Oh yeh noticed that I have extra growth on the first actual node where that leaf is very brown, is this normal?

i just built a NFT system out of pvc and ive been researching and everyone says to 1min on 4 or 5 off you want your plants to get some oxygen or the roots will prolly rot... and also might want a air stone in your reservoir to oxygenate the water... you can pick these up at pet stores for about $15, hope this helps

seems like it might be your problem due to the drooping leafs... idk I'm not an expert though I myself am also a new grower but prolly wouldn't hurt to try these methods

Thanks for the info Kidfarmer I have an airstone and pump laying around that I was going to use for a aeroponics system i'll stick that in tomorrow when i get a chance.

I thought the fact that the nutrient solution was dropping from the end of the nft system in to the water would oxygenate it. I give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

She does look overwatered. I can't help with a solution though, as I'm a soil grower. I can say, as far as you seeing further damage from nute burn, that's normal too - what you do to the plants doesn't always show immediately, and when you do something that damages (such as overfeeding) even after you correct, you may continue seeing damage until it's reached the extent of what you did, if that makes sense? Watch the new growth - that will be your indicator of wether or no the problem has been corrected.

Thank you both I think it wont do any harm to add the extra oxygen anyways and continue to watch the new growth and see how it develops. The new growth seems quite healthy today. Ill take a couple of pictures for you to see shortly.

Here is a wee picture of the new growth today.



I have also tried a wee bit of lst'ing but dont know if this will be of any use as the plant is still so small but thought it was worth a try os will stick up a new picture tomorrow.

The new growth looks much better, think you have the problem licked. Now if you can find a way (probably a timer) to cut back on the watering, she'll do great!

Hay folks,

Just spoke to the guys at www.growwell.co.uk who I get all my supplies from and their tech guy says that my nft system's pump should be on 24/7 and that I shouldn't worry about root rot as the way its designed it lets the roots get lots of oxygen.

hmmm confused now, anyone else out there that has a view on wether to have your pump running 24/7 or wether it should be on a timer eg. 1min on for every 4 off? The rockwool does seem to be wet all the time so I guess that cant be great for the roots. I just had a look and the roots are already spreading out along the nutrient film and look nice and white.

As I don't have another timer or the cash to fork out for a digital timer I have stuck the pump onto the same timer as the light and it seem to be doing ok for now.

Here are a couple of pictures.




wee bit of LST'ing going on here as you can see, Just pinned down my second bit today so we will see how that goes.



I'll try and get a digital timer asap before she (fingers crossed) gets any bigger. So the pumps off when the lights are off which means it wont dry up during the night. I'll just need to keep an eye on it for now.

The mustard I am growing for my pet lizards seem to be doing quite well too, just wish it grew as quick as the weed :)

The bottom ones? As far as I am aware they are mustard as thats what the seed bag says on them but I could be wrong. I actually got them in a pack from eBay that included Dandelion seeds and some different types of supplements for my Bearded Dragons.

Strangely the dandelion seeds wont grow under the HID lamps but thrive if I stick them in some rockwool in front of the window. Think it may be a little hot for them under the lamp. :-?

Im quite happy with the progress so far. The whole LST'ing thing is rather scary but looking at those pictures I posted the stem seems super thick so probably not much to worry about.

I'm really surprised at how small and stumpy it seems but I guess it doesn't have to stretch if the lights are close enough.

Hi mate, There is another way of getting more nodes than just topping your plant, Its called LST ( low stress training ) this is where you bend the main stem so that the smaller nodes on the side can catch up. Look in to it on here there is lots about LSTing.
