My First Grow For Fun

Hi Everyone!

I am very new to the grow thing. After reading for a couple months on RIU and gathering so much information from this great forum and people I decided to give growing a try. I am doing this for fun and the experience only… but it would also be pretty neat getting a little finished product that you grew your self and was kick butt smoke too. I am using things around the house and keeping purchasing to a minimum on this attempt and adding things as needed. Thanks to all that contributed information on this great forum for newbies. Comments welcomed and I will update every few days.

I am going to use a space that is 18” inch deep, 40” inch wide, 23” inch height. I will also be trying LST (low stress training) on my plants in this grow area. I am starting with some random bag seeds that I had.

I cut a couple holes in back of cabinet for cords and made an exhaust fan from a car fan that plugs into cigarette lighter by using a 120 v adaptor that was lying around. I have read others say…Don’t use foil… but on the other hand I have read some say you can use foil just use dull side. Well since I am using Cfl bulbs which I read don’t get very hot… I am using foil (dull side). I lined inside cabinet with dull side of foil and used a couple dark strips material inside around door frame to make sure cabinet was sealed good for dark periods. I attached a couple power strips inside top of cabinet for later. I have a small fan for now in the cabinet to blow on the plants to strengthen them and circulate the air while the lights are on. I can open these doors when ever I want for fresh air exchange. I am doing this grow with things around the house…buying minimal supplies and this is just for… My Experience In My First Grow and For Fun.

Welcome to RIU! Your space is pretty short. It may cause some issues. You will have to use a T-5 or cfls. Something low profile or easy to space around you plants. Just remember once your plant starts to flower it will get at least twice as big before it finishes. Plus the 2 biggest problems with new growers is over watering and over ferting. Let the soil dry before re-watering and dont feed till 4-5 weeks and go easy with the nutes. Enjoy the site and good luck.

Aug 14th 2009 – Below is photo of two random bag seeds which the smoke was awesome. I put 1 seed outside in tomato pot with growing tomato plants. Put the other seed in a pot with dirt in a closet in dark. Hopefully these will be girls so I will refer to them as “Merry” and “Jane.

Aug 17th 2009 – I noticed “Merry” reaching up through the dirt with her baby leaves. I brought her in and transplanted her in a 12 oz cup with drainage holes. The dirt was from Walmart it feeds up to 9 months. Don’t remember name because I threw away bag. She is under 1 Cfl 26 watt 6500K Daylight bulb. Watered with rain water. Under 18/6 light schedule

Aug 18th 2009 - Two real leaves forming on “Merry

Aug 19th 2009 – Went in closet and low and behold I saw “Jane” peeking out in the big container. Her baby leaves were formed and the seed still attached. I transplanted her in a 12 oz cup with drainage holes with the dirt from Walmart. “Jane’s” little seed fell off sometimes after transplant. I now added another Cfl 26 watt 6500K Daylight bulb. “Merry” and “Jane” together are under 2 26 Watt 6500K Daylight bulbs and 18/6 light schedule. They are no more then 2” inches from lights and I turn them about 4 times a day. Temps with lights on between 82 – 84 degrees. Lights off temps between 69 – 72 degrees in grow cabinet. Just incase “the girls” may be boys today I planted two random bag seeds outside in tomato pots and 2 bag seeds in container in closet.

Aug 22nd 2009 – “Merry” and “Jane” continue to grow. I watered them with rain water today.

Looks good. I know you like the foil but If you look up the best colors for growing flat off white paint is at the top after mylar. Foil is at the bottom just before black paint. The dull side is deffinitely better. Its not the reflection but the difussion of the light that is important. Start with a 6500K daylight bulb for veg and go with 3200Kor lower bulbs for flower. You will need more then one to get the trichs to swell in late flower.

Ive been grownin a couple plants for like two weeks and im new to this grownin thing. I was wondering how can u tell what type of seeds are male and female? And also how can u tell which plants are male plants?

cut some holes in the back for air and it might be a good idea to cut a big enough hole for a fan to blow in and circulate some air around. good ventilation is very important

I HAVE THREE PLANTS
FROM THE DIRT THERE LIKE5 INCHES TALL I VE BEEN GROWIN THEM FOR LIKE TWO WEEKS. WHEN CAN I TELL WHICH ONE IS A FEMALEAND MALE PLANT?

I have read here on RIU...you can start seeing sex after 2 weeks of flowing (12/12 light schedule). Females have white hairs and males have balls. Pictures I found on this forum below of female and male plant.

Aug 23nd 2009 – I transplanted “Merry” and “Jane” into 2 liter containers today. I
covered containers with dark material to protect the roots from light. I added
1 - 23 watt warm 3000K cfl today. “Merry” and “Jane” are now under
2 - 26 watt daylight 6500K & 1 – 23 watt warm 3000K cfl’s.
The two continue to grow.

Aug 24th 2009 – "Merry" and "Jane" continue to grow. I planted two seeds today.

Aug 25th 2009 – I planted two seeds on 19th & 24th August just incase
“Merry” and “Jane” became “Tim” and “Bill”. Today the two seeds I planted on 19 August are up! They are named “Shana” and “Sara” and hopefully be girls. Going to water good today…all look dry. “Merry” and “Jane” continue to grow.
I added another 23 watt warm 3000K cfl today.

Plants are now under (2) 26 watt Daylight 6500K and (2) 23 watt Warm 3000K cfl's. I will be adding more lights when needed.

hey u cant really tell yet if ur plants are female or male ur gonna hafta waait a bit if u veg long enuff u will b able to tell.. but if ur in a hurry u can flower them at a early stage and put ur lights on a 12/12 and they will show there sex faster BUT way less yeild from what i have hurd and u can easily tell if it is a female or male once u are in ur flowering stage. Looks good you think i can get mine like that i got 4cfl 26w 1750 lumens in a small 32oz box

Aug 26th 2009 – “Bubba Kushman” Thanks for the information on diffusion of light…I took white paper and put it over dull side foil today in cabinet.

Aug 27th 2009 – All continue to grow...

Aug 28th 2009 – Today I moved my power strips and light fixtures around in grow cabinet for the growing plants. Watered all today.
