They have these big 85w actual cfl's on sale at lowes for $25:

You won't find them in lowes online, in store they are boxed as 430wequivelent 85 actual WOBBLE LIGHT REPLACEMENT BULB
Might be cheaper to run this, or two as compared to running 3x 42w plus the sockets and power strip. (Or more of any other)
I have read that they don't put off much heat at all, and actually thought about getting one or two myself for a veg area.

the hps will make too much heat for your 3' cab they need like 24 inches space between the plants or you will get 80*F+ and stress them.
Stay with CFLs use alot of low wattage ones for better light coverage or just have 4-6 with higher wattage. make sure you keep them low and adjust them daily and your smoke should be ok.
I would stay away from 5 gallon pots in a cab that small just get some 1 gal pots and let the plants stay in those. Flower when they are around 12-15" so you still have room for those CFL's later in the grow. I grew some plants in 6x6 pots (less than a gal.) and they did fine. they grew 25" tall. thats over the healthy 1gal = 1 foot ratio but you will be ok for the situation.
I don't expect your looking for anything more than some good personal smoke. I expect you will get .5-1 ounces from that cab if you do it right.

I let you know when I get enough money to start my grow.
I have a question about germinating though.
I've tried starting in moist paper towel and water. I got between just cracked and 1" roots.
every time I go to plant them the roots shrivel and die.
know what I am doing wrong?
