My Apologies

My apologies to all, i have posted a few threads about the same problem, im hoping in doing this i will finally get an answer that works.


ok, so far i have tried three times and still nothing so this is my last go before i give up.

today a put a bunch of seeds in between two bunches of paper towel and wet with bottled water in a ziplock container in a dark closet to germinate, i will post as i go step by step so somebody can walk me through untill my seedlings break ground. if anybody wants to be that helping hand it would be much apreciated.

used distilled water... if u cant get them to germ in a paper towel or survive the trnsplant into dirt ( if thats what ur medium is ) then just start them in dirt... keep them moist but not over water keep a cfl over them or put on ur computer or use a seedling heating pad ( hydro store )... or read and follow step by step threads they have on riu use the search button

the only thing i can think of is you are over caring for them. once they sprout you should be able to put them in soil and forget about them for a few days. They will magically appear.

Sometimes it happens in a day or two, sometimes it takes a week.

keep the soil moist (NOT WET) and warm.

seed mat is a must, fo sho

Make sure the paper towel isn't too wet though. And when they crack and you're ready to transplant. pick it up by the shell. DO NOT touch the root.. the cover, water a little bit and keep the cfl on. then you'll see your baby creeping through the soil and the fun begins

Dont even look at them until monday then see if they cracked

well the way i go is
#1 get a plate take a paper tower fold it in 4 then wet it, then put seeds on top of it, then another paper towel folded in 4 on top then wet it, then another plate on top to keep it dark, i check the paper towel every day to make sure it stays wet.

#2 i wait about a week till i can almost see the plant starting, tap root about 3/4 of a inch long

#3 i then make a little hole in the dirt and plant it so the seed itsself is above the dirt just barely so the light can hit it.

#4 then in about 24 hours you will have a plant about an inch tall and it will grow happily ever after. works every time for me

**SIDE NOTE**

when planting the seed like i said make sure you have room in the pot to add some dirt because it will stretch just a little bit so adding dirt will re balance the stability of the main stem, or just wait till you transplant.

also i use regular tap water.. and sometimes i touch the tap root by mistake.. it did not explode or die or anything. but seems that most people its a big no NO to touch it lol

i plant them after the taproot is about 1/4 inch long so the seeds are already cracked

oh i thought you just germinated them lol

i agree with what everyone else has basically said up til this poing.. once they germ, gently take them and place them about 1/4 inch or so into soil or whatever medium your using... after they are in your medium, just place them under a cfl that is a 6500k rating, maybe three or four inches away at first... you should see a sseedling within a week or so at most usually.. the key though is to keep the soil evenly moist.. too dry, and your seeds will die, too moist and they will drown and not make it either.. this is why i recomend using cfl's for seedlings as they tend to not dry out the soil like a hid light will do..
also a side note.. bigger pots will hold more water and will be less likely to dry out on you then a smaller pot will, but its up to you to find a size that works best for you..

I had the same problem using the wet paper towel method and went to the previously mentioned 'stick them right into the soil/medium' and then just kept it moist. Works like a charm and no chance of messing up the tap root on accident. Hope this helps. Peace.

i do the straight to soil thing also,

remember you need to keep them warm until they crack for you as well...

im going to plant my newly germinated seeds in a plastic greenhouse tray that i got from zellers for like 5 bux, new shultz moisture control soil, and after the first 4 weeks ill be using shultz plant food.

Soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hrs and plant them. They will be up in 2 or 3 days.

The problem you maybe having is from touching the tap root with your fingers.

ive always had very good success just putting beans into soil filled nursery 6-packs. use bottom heat and mist the soil surface with a spray bottle lightly before it dries. (usually couple sprays each day.) only times ive ever used the paper towel is with really old beans that took a long time to pop in soil.
transplant shock can be a pretty big stress on newly 'born' plants. the fewer times you disturb root mass (especially when there is only one root...) the quicker your babies will take off.

also the 24 hour soak is a good idea too. use hot water as this will help kill any mold/fungus spores that may have hitched a ride on your beans.

When you plant your seeds with tap roots hanging out, bury the seed with it. Just cover it with enough soil to cover the seed, but it needs that experience of pushing up and out of the soil.
I just germ my seeds on a wet napkin, then poke a hole with my pinky finger and stick the root showing down in the hole and cover the top of the seed just over with soil.
