Compared to 99% of all the seeds I have germinated, it has 3 leaves coming out rather than 2.

Is this some random mutation or does this happen sometimes?

It happens sometimes. Plant enough seeds and you'll come across it. I usually get one every few grows. It's just a random mutation.

Every once in a while, growers will run into a “trileaf” seedling. This is a relatively common mutation, and you’re likely to run into it if you germinate a lot of cannabis seeds. 3-leaf cannabis seedlings should generally be treated like any other seedling.

They will grow about 1/3 more side branches than regular seedlings, so a 3-leaf seedling might be a good candidate for cannabis plant training or a ScrOG setup.

Keep your eye out for herming. Sometimes its caused by plant confusion with light schedule changes. Or if your light timer is messed up. Waking em up during sleep hours. Also happens when reveging. Gives 3 leaves when transitioning back.
Its a seedling so like others have said earlier it's just a mutant but keep your eyes on it. Should be fine tho.

Whorled plants are cool, I've got one going right now too. I only remember having another one once, but in my younger years I didn't pay as much attention to my plants so I might not have noticed them back then.

Had quite of few of them over the years growing outdoors, sometimes they are good plants, often times they are scraggly poor producers. Kinda a crapshoot on what you'll get. In my experience they do hermie often, don't know what others have found, but I always kept them (unless they hermied).

This male did this.. no "celery branch garbage".. just three sets of branches on every node.. had he been female it would of been great for yeild.. i used him for pollen hoping this trait will be dominate and carry over.... i popped 2 seeds of this strain and both were whorled/triploid

Was hands on with 7 trifoliates this year and they did not impress me either. I did not have the hermie issue, not a drop of pollen or nanner...only reason im chiming in here is to say that. I dont think hermie trait is directly correlated, i didnt see hermies and i went through male and female trifoliates this summer.

l was hoping to get another persons experience, glad you posted. Like I said, it was my experience, but it might just of been the luck of the draw.

Mutations are pretty common , especially at first early growth. But most grow out of it. Even bud formation can get a little wonky at times. Could be a first gen seed run - all kinds of stuff can be different.
As long as plant is healthy - keep going.

I've had this kind of mutation give out multiple branches from nodes. Like 3 or 4 instead of 2. Was the easiest plant to grow multiple colas on I've ever had.

Once had a personal cross that had a branch of regular 2 leaves per bract, another with three and one with 4. All on the same plant. Mutants do happen but the bud has been the same on this hill.

A couple of interesting mutants in the current lineup, Cactus Flower (more serrated) from Vashon and the Don Knotz from Prairie State genetics. Looking forward to see what happens.
