Moving from 400 HPS to LED..

Hi All,

Has anyone moved from 400w HPS to LED? Could you suggest which LED setup would match or better the HPS lamp?

Would adding extra LED bulbs to a HPS setup have any benefits?

Thanks.

Id recommend the Onyx Grow unless you want to DIY with COBs. The Onyx Grow dissipates about 210W at 30% efficient for $450 and is 3000K. If you DIY you could build a 200W 3000K for about $300 and you will get 37% efficiency with no lense losses.

Amazing, 2 weeks ago you were posting and arguing that NO WAY are LED's better than HPS...LMFAO.
Amazing maybe for you, hardly for the rest of the membership, as any good experienced grower knows, ... if you want yield, grow in sun or HPS, but if you don't want your parents moving to another trailer at such an important part of your life, go cheaper use CFL's or LED, but if you must go the best thats solareflare to you kiddies ....lol

have you ever grown with LEDS?

Idk what you're talking about. If I wanted to go cheap I would have got a 600w hps or another cmh instead of LED if I were trying to go "cheap" and saved hundreds on the light. Also, solar flares definitely aren't the best either. True that HID, particularly hps is tried and true but... all experienced knowledgeable growers understand hid still is very wasteful, why we deal with so much heat. Also why mh runs hotter than hps and cmh is cooler than both. But HID is like a hotrod, old technology pushrod carb motor compared to a newer sportscar. Idk I like turbos fuel injection and computers to more efficiently control them all. Old school still works and it's reliable but in time it inevitably becomes just a classic not the gold standard like in its glory days. I think we will see that eventually with current hid systems whether LED or others.

SupraSPL, what strain is that in your picture, and did you grow that with LED?
Do you have the plans of the Led rig your talking about to build please.

Hey wheely, that is a Budda Tahoe OG fem from Cali Connection. It was grown for 4 weeks under HPS and 3 weeks under LED. I was in the process of phasing out 600 HPS and switching to all LED. I have grown it many times under 600HPS and it never turned colors like that until the LED.

For a 200W diy COB:
(4) Cree CXA3070 3000K $175 ebay or arrow
(4) 1500mA drivers $50
(4) heatsink fan combo $36
(1) adjustable fan power supply 12V 2A $6
Total $266

Wow, thats great thanks. do you think it would perform the same with just LED?

I can get this stuff in uk too!.. altho the drivers from china, never ordered from china, dunno how customs works
Does the 3000k refer to light temp?

Yes it seems to be performing much better with just LED. With HPS (old bulbs) I was only getting .3-.4 gr/W. With a HPS/LED mixture I was getting .6 gr/W. With LED alone I am hoping for 1gr/W. I do not grow high yielding varieties, I am sure big yielders would do much better.

Each COB would get its own heatsink/fan to mount onto. This allows you to control the height and spread of each light and get the best possible coverage in your canopy.

Excellent cheers!, what doess COB stand for?

So is it best i take it, so get a sheet of metal, get heat sink glue, glue heat sink to sheeting, then glue the leds to the sheeting with the glue as well?

Really wanting to try this out. Watching some CXA 3070 30H Z4's on ebay but they end today, hoping to have some money later in the week if they re-list.

I ditched my 400 hps and went with AREA 51 SGS160 and so far so good. This is my first grow with this light, it is a small 2x3 grow with two plants in a closet/tent setup. I am 3 weeks into flower and all is good so far. Give me 6 weeks and I can report back on yield comparison. So far my observations, plants loved this light in Veg. No heat issue's light runs couple degrees over ambient temps. Did notice a bit of stretch from previous MH/HPS grow. I did recently add some T5 for under/side lighting.
