They are all based on the Matheson story, yup. Vincent Price version in the 60s, Heston in the 70s, Smith remake, and a bunch of others.
Heston version will always be my favorite.

One of the many great scenes, very relevant to the current climate. The way he delivers the lines, dripping with cynicism and bitter regret, as if to say "we fucked up badly this time"....
I'm a big fan of the director, Boris Sagal (Katey's dad). Sadly, he was decapitated in a terrible freak accident.
