Most silent inline fan set up for 600w HPS? Need advice.

Hello
I am upgrading to a 600w hps and I'm looking for the most silent inline fan/filter set up.
What brand and size do you think is the most silent?
I am going to use a fan speed controller and I was wondering if a 8" inch fan on low speed would be quieter than a 6" inch fan blowing at a higher speed?
Opinions and help would be greatly appreciated.

What you're going to have to do regardless, is do the DIY fan control box. Build a box and put the fan inside of it to muffle the noise. The noise of the air will be louder than the fan itself....

I have a 400CFM centrifugal with a speed controller and at half power the fan is virtually silent (except for airflow noise) whereas it's quite a bit noisier at full power.

"Fan box" is a great idea and helps quite a bit. Cant answer the 6in or 8in question, but also the air leaving the exhaust is also very loud. I have mine going into the house duct and you can barely hear it. I have also had it going to a large insulated moving box in the past and it helps.

I would try pc fans they r the most silent..try genteltyphone for up to 70cfm..try those guys http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php hope this helps.
i got a Dyton 6" axial fan 240cfm, and put a speed contoller to controll both air flow and sound levels, it worked as a charm..also try to make a wood box for ur fan AND -try this out- line it from the inside with a mass loaded carbon sheets, they r my best pick for sound proofing.Ruber dampers r a must too.cheers.:joint::joint::joint:

I'm running 435 cfm through a cool tube and it got warm in there, you'll need at least 7 of those pc fans to even have a chance + you need to push air in.

I have a carbon filter at the end of my cool tube, it acts like a silencer or a muffler on a car and reduces the noise quite a bit. It's quieter than my box fan I run on my window

Good luck.

What type of speed controller do you use? I hear the cheap ones work by starting and stopping the motor rapidly causing a loud hum. To my understanding this decreases the life of the motor.

go to home depo and get a fan speed controller, its a turn button that ur suppose to mount in the wall(like ur regular lights switch),connect that to ur axial fan(inline fan) it will controll ur fan speed and make it almost silent-depending on the quality of ur fan vs. cfm-..dyton was a good brand for me,but don't go for 7-10$fans, and keep an eye on the noise levels in dB on the product specs, any thing above 40-50dB will be very noisy. Vortex makes a REAL nice REAL quite inline fan. MUCH quieter than say a CAN, ECOPLUS, or ActiveAir. They also make these blue plastic ones, I forget the name but google blue plastic inline duct fan or something like that and i'm sure you can find it.

Panasonic Whisperline inline fans are the most quiet option out there. The only problems with these is that they are very bulky/heavy and are good for runs under 10 feet long. I have the 6" 240 cfm cooling a 1000 watt just fine.

Thanks for all the reply's.
Can you place a carbon filter on the Panasonic Whisperline?
I am leaning towards the Panasonic 6", Vortex 6" or a 8" max can...

So what did you go with?? I'm running a Growbright 6" and it's SOOO loud! I made a muffler I saw done by SmokinTrichs somewhere that seemed to have the most thought put into it, and it cut down on the exhaust, but the noise is still too much. I'm not to keen on the idea of boxing my fan either. And yes, it's on a speed controller.
