hard to tell. is it real powdery? unfortunately it may be looking at this guys experience http://www.gardenscure.com/420/plant-nursery/145445-white-spots-hydroton-dwc.html hopefully not. the only for sure way to get rid of powdery mildew is a sulfur burner. sure you can clean everything, but it will always be in the air. wish you the best of luck and i hope its not mildew cause its a fucking bitch to get rid of. good luck! and fuck you powdery mildew!

this sheds some light on the problem but not sure if its right
"It's called "efflorescence", a white powdery substance that forms on rock, mainly brickwork. It is caused by the evaporation of water containing process "salts" which are left on the surface of the clay balls. It won't do any harm. Just wash it off every now and then, it doesn't matter if it goes into your fish tank, a bit of salt doesn't hurt anything. It will eventually go away when all of the minerals are leached out of the Clay balls.

if it were PM and in the rocks like that more than likely your plant would be covered with it or at least in places, its probably nothing more than salts from nutrients.

Still not sure but thanks to both of you for quick responses. I put a bit of pebble to my finger and the white bits disappeared, would it do this if it was salts? At night time temps have been getting quite low, 15c and my hygrometer shows humidity has reached as high as 85%. In day time it sticks around 35-40% humidity and 28-33c. I have just added a little desk fan pushing direct air over em and plan to leave heater on in the room my tent is in during lights out. I have been running extraction with lights on (2rvk fans) but turned off fans when lights out to save elec, might keep them on all time now, I just thought with em being so small I could get away with that. I have also changed drip feed times from 15min each hour to each hour and half as one plant is now showing signs over over watering.

If it was mildew should I expect to see it disappear if I continue with these recent changes?

if your seeing whitish residue on the rocks it may be salts from the foods. they build up on the top or edges of pots or the drain holes. does that to the rocks sometimes. look at hydro drippers where they sit youll see white residue built there...foods/salt.
had to see this with hps light

Today when not high I realised that I had only just filled the res with canna veg, up till then was just canna start which is really mild nutes so this made me think it would not have much salt (and ive only been feeding canna start about 7days), so I'm pretty sure its PM. Plus I noticed the shit on my rockwool too.

The good news is that my environment has improved with the changes I made. Temps lowest on lights off were 17.5c and humidity at its highest was 55%. And I removed most the clay pebbles I could see were effected.

How dya think I will get on with this? Should I still be very concerned? Should I expect it to go naturally? Or should I be rushing to the hydro store to buy yet more products?

just leave it. if it was the salts building its no biggy. its part of that style of growing., we all get it to a point just some shows more as here on clay balls or where drippers drip to the medium. soil in pots we see at drain holes or edges of top of pot. nothing to panik over
