MH Light Size

Do I need the same wattage on the Metal Halide in the vegetative room as the HPS in the flowering room? The flowering room will have 16-18 plants with a 1000w HPS. The vegetative room will have 16-18 plants as well, can I get away with less wattage? The MH's seem to go from 400w to 1000w, with no 600w being offered.

why not 2 400's and save some cash on the electric
I was hoping I could get by on one 400w and save the up front cost of two hoods, two ballasts and two bulbs. Maybe the long term savings on the light bill would offset that. Power is .16 cents a kwh here.

  • Primary light (no natural light) coverages for the different grow light wattages are as follows.
    • 100 watt lights: 1.5FT x 1.5FT growing area
    • 150/175 watt lights: 2FT x 2FT growing area
    • 250 watt lights: 3FT x 3FT growing area
    • 400 watt lights: 5FT x 5FT growing area
    • 600 watt lights: 6FT x 6FT growing area
    • 1000 watt lights: 8FT x 8FT growing area
Most of what I read says that chart covers both types of bulb.

Its all about watts per square foot of canopy.....what size are the two areas to be lit.

40-50watts per square foot is what you want. Doesnt matter if its for one or one hundred plants............check out the threads in my sig they may help.

Holy shit....wtf......ughh, thats fucking obscene.

As I was starting to read I thought it will take forever to make up that cash....but ....whoa

Mine is .085/kwh--check out my grow...if I lived where you lived my bill would be:shock:

So in theory, if I have smaller pots for the 16-18 vegetative plants and they take up less space as a whole.....I can run less wattage than in the flower room where the 16-18 plants will be in 5 gallon buckets.

I don't know where you get this info but there is no way to get that sqare footage out of those wattages...sry 40-50 watts per foot

1000w/64sq.ft=15+watts per foot:lol:

You must like fluffy bud...Maybe you should check out my grow......I use 3000 watts to cover 96 square feet and it is insufficient--allowing me to only use 72 square feet

ok maybe you should check around.....keep taking quotes out of grow books from ppl....where is la9's link to his grow....hhmmmm is he just regurgitating info he reads (from what sources, hhmmm), or offering advice based on his experience.....because It takes 100hrs a month to maintain my grow so I don't have alot of time for grow books

And I said per square foot of CANOPY......but if you don't appreciate or recognize help when you are receiving it or even reading responses thoroughly then I wish you luck.

well all im telling you is that that seems like a bit much, and i was the first to respond to his question so dont say shit to me because im not into that whole internet trash talk you shut the fuck up or else bullshit because theres no point to it. I want to know why you would need 5500 watts for a 10x11 room so help me out because i cant for the life of me begin to see how i would need that much light

Absolutely. i run 1000watts in veg and 3000 watts in flower.......and please be careful what advice you take around here......if you want to verify my info, and I encourage you to do so....you will find it is grounded in scientific fact.

Please check what Potroast, VictorVicious, Al B Fuct and some of those guys have to say......they have great info posted here.

Check out my threads, my op is not without its problems but I will be able to offer some info so you don't make the same mistakes I have in the past...
Good luck....overgrow them all

How do you know....

what area is he growing in?

what style op is he running?

maybe he is growing trees 10' tall, maybe he will veg for 4-7 days like me

You can't tell a man he needs 400watts because he says he has 16 plants

And StStepen....i am not trash talking, I am trying to help the thread starter.....you have answered a question with conviction yet enough information was not provided to be able to do that

I grow in 13x13 rooms-But my canopy in flower is only 72 square feet---I run 3000watts in that space

You should hit my link if you think anything I say is bullshit:blsmoke:

A know-it-all I am not...you recommended a 1000w for 64 square foot. Thats 15watts per foot.

I do know how to divide, multiply, add....you get the point.

any of you want to offer a link to your grows. I am curious why my strains require three times the light....maybe I am doing something wrong

3000/72=41.666667 watts/sq.ft.

Check out OLDS grow man...Everything OLD says coincides with all the scientificaly reccomended info out there..Not to mention its what all the pros reccomend on here.

OLD once again much respect. How many lumens per square feet does that make?
Also i want to know how tall ur max veg hieght is before flower?

If I could Id Build my own mini me version of ur grow in my closet...But just need a lil more info..LMAO..

actually I would want to check my EYE Hortilux bulbs to be exact. Or test with a lux meter since the lamps have a bit of time on them now....but its around 3000lumens/ft in my grow 144k/24sq.ft--give or take
But we see lumens plants see PAR watts--more on that later

7-8" max

Np--hit my journal in hydro or the 4000w thread here--i feel bad jacking moss mans thread...already had to show my ass a little in here:mrgreen:

thx for your support....i just want moss man to get the right value out of his lamp purchase...It is a relatively important component to indoor.....these other guys you can't tell anything to...unless you have a book on the shelves of BarnesandNoble..
