whats up, im new to growing but not to toking but i have a question what all do i need to operate a 100 watt MH bulb? Is a ballast absolutely necessary? or can i buy a special socket? i appreciate the ideas.

yea thats what i figured, well shit i guess im gonna take it back and get CFLs
You can't run it without a ballast to what i know... wall's don't provide enough voltage to get them started. 100 watts of metal-halide isn't much anyway. You might as well just go with CFL's. CFL's work just as well for veg and that Metal Halide isn't amazing for flowering anyway(HPS is best for that). If you want a cheap HID light for flowering go to www.HTGsupply.com and get their 150watt HPS with remote ballasts... only $80. That'll be good enough for growing 1 bushy plant or 4 small ones (3 feet).
