So, my friend gave me a mixture of seeds, J1, headbands, hindu Kush. I decided to experiment and try different soil around my yard (aware not all soil will thrive, just experimenting) I did not germinate any of them, i just put soil in different containers and labeled them accordingly. Now, should i leave the cups in the sun or in the shade? i feel if i leave them in the sun the dirt will dry too fast. one medium i used had some perilite in it is it safe to put a seed in with perilite? if the seeds do grow, how long before i will see a little sprout? Should i water everyday? I was thinking about germinating some of the seeds but couldn't decide on a method. step by step reccomendations?

Whatever soil you choose, you will want perlite as MJ likes a nice airy soil with good drainage....I would leave the cups in the shade until they sprout and makesure to keep them moist, not soaked though.Probably easier to just keep em inside with plastic over the cups until they sprout and then put them outside.

I re read, I am a bit confused...you are asking about germination, do you not have the seeds in soil? you do not need to germinate out of soil if you do not want to, can just pop them in dirt about 1/4 inch and keep moist. They will say hello in 5 days or so.

I'm a little confused, are you using soil out of your yard or potting mix?

I would advise not to use yard soil. Perlite and vermiculite should always be a part of your potting mix.

Put them in the sun or at least somewhere warm, as soon as they break ground they need to be under sun or lighting immediately

I'd suggest planting seed directly into small pots w/rooting mixture. The germinate in paper towel method is full of potential f-ups unless you know what you are doing. Expect to see them pop up in 72 hrs give or take.

Watering - Let dry completely between waterings after seedlings are about 6-7 days aboveground.

The most common mistakes for first time growers is overwatering, and overfertilizing.

My best suggestion for you is to spend 8 hrs minimum on your own reading about basic growing stuff on this and other websites. Read the stickies on this site at least.

Don't know what your budget is but don't try to save money on soil. But it doesn't have to be big $$ either. Most all of the stuff at the big box stores is decent, no matter what the soil snobs say. Definitely better than yard soil, unless you live in an area with really great topsoil. Even then I would not use more than 1/3 native soil.
