Hey,
basically i am going to make a cool tube soon and i was wondering if it has to be pyrex glass tubing to withstand the heat...or could i use n ordinary glass vase with the end cut off with a tile cutter?

cheers :):)

Thats hard to answer because it would depend on the quality of glass/thickness of the vase, it might not be pyrex, but it might be tempered or not.

It might work, it might work for ever, it might explode after 2 weeks, the fact is if your running any HID lighting theres gonna be a lot of heat, and when the light comes off if your fans are running the glass will cool fast and if its cheap glass it will shatter.

the fan i got on their is a 270 cfm but i think i could go bigger and get a remote axial fan it would be much better for passing through the carbon filter

Ive used the good ol hurricane tubes from Wal-mart. They are 1/8" thick glass. not thick at all; but they are cost effective. As long as you dont run the bulbs with no fans while splashing water on them you will be fine with 3mm glass. (1/8 inch)

The bulbs themselves are 3mm plain glass. not tempered. They would respond similar to the hurricane tubes in that it would take RAPID cooling like the addition of water to make tham crack. air cooling cannot achieve this...ever. (unless there is a fracture already and you have north pole winds directed at your overheating, fractured lamps...even then...k im stoned and rambling)

here is an idea.

When i was a lad my grandfather got out this cucumber tube. it is a glass tube you grow squashes and cucumbers in keeps them straight. these cucumber tubes could be just what your looking for.

see an ideal cooling tube but be warned these are vintage, so ask your grandparents and check ebay

it has to be tempered glass to handle the heat. just remember cool tubes create a massive hot spot directly beneath them so you have to stay 16 in away from plants loosing out on 100,000+ lumens with a 1000w

The bake arounds are very good to use ideally you'll want a 6 inch tube, but you can still manage to get a 400 watt into a 4 inch tube. All i used is a flower vase that is 1/4 thick and have been using it for 6 months as long as you have enough air passing through you don't need tempered although it is better and safer. Mine is not temperd and i can touch the tube while the light is on directly where the light is! You never know unless you try right! Good luck. And by the way mine is 2 inches away no burns or nothing. One thing to remember though try to push the air though it cause the fan will build up heat. Any questions let me know. I will post a pic of it later tonight.
