Mainline with WWxBB

Decided to experiment with a freebie seed I received last month by starting a mainline early in her veg.

Breeder: Female Seeds
Strain: WW x BB (White Widow x Big Bud)
Age: 21 days from planting seed
Number of Nodes: 4
Mainlined node: Above the 3rd
Pot size: 1gal
Lighting: 55w PL-L
Medium: Soilless mix
Nutes: Primarily Earth Juice with organic supplements

Before the initial mainline training:

After topping:

I left all the fan leaves thinking this will maximize energy production to grow the new tops. Now wait...

Took cuttings from the girl today and pruned the fan leaves leaving just the starting of the manifold structure.

Now I have a baseline. I hope in a week to ten days I will be able to train down the four new tops and top each for eight mains. My first attempt with mainlining was/is on a pure-indica Hashberry pheno which stalled at four mains. In hindsight it was a poor candidate for mainlining (pic of the tight node stacking for this pheno in flower below) and am hoping the WWxBB gets more vertical with the new tops.

Awesome! Im going to be scrogging and mainlining WWxBB side by side. Im at day 5 since planting seeds. Theyre both around 3/4" tall!
Nice! If you decide to journal it, let me know. Otherwise, if you think of it fill me in on the results when your done. Good luck!

Hit you on both spots here Yankee, haha. I like to follow a fellow Mainliner if I can, catch me on your other thread as well brother. The Cataracts in my sig are also MainLined :D

**Edit - Looks like your BBxWW will take a little nicer to the training **

LOL - just responded to your other post on Hashberry and checked out your Cataract Kush thread. Your girls are looking good and the Mainlined baby couldn't look any better - nice form!

I've got a WWxBB too. cant wait to see how she yields!

I'm trying to do the same thing I did with a WWxWW from Sos...
I topped it and supercropped it a bunch of times...ended up having 4 main cola
and everything down to the bottom was nice and dense.

I have tried reading up on mainlining....it's interesting...
I think what I do is a variation of it...to some extent.

I supercrop and top fairly early....even damaging the plant as a seedling to strengthen it...
Then I continue to supercrop sometimes up to the 2nd week in flower.
Before she hits flower I 'lollipop' until the light can get to the bottom.

great results so far.

how does what I do differ from a 'mainline' grow?
looking forward to seeing how mine does by comparison.
I'm in soil and on node 3 or so.....18 days from seed.

Welcome aboard SRC! If I am reading your approach correctly, it sounds like it differs from Mainlining but the net results should be similar.

My take is that Mainlining is a combination of topping with LST to train the plant to grow with a very specific, symmetrical structure. In doing so, the theory is that none of the 4/8/16 mains will be treated as dominant by the plant and each will get an equal share of nutrients and hormones so that they will grow evenly. I believe Supercropping is a HST technique where individual branches are damaged periodically to slow down their growth and/or divert their growth. Both techniques prune lower vegetative growth limiting energy production and transpiration while allowing the plant to focus new growth where targeted.

Would be real interesting to compare results. If you are journaling the grow, point me in the right direction, otherwise stop back with updates.

Cheers!

ok, so the goal of mainline would be clipping it every time it tries to grow away from the main node?
would that be like topping it over and over and over?

I guess what I'm asking is...what process do you use to get all the branches to stay in the crux?

Here is the source of the Mainlining technique for reference. You are correct: new node pairs are created by simply topping and this is done over and over to produce as main mains as you like (typically 8/16). Training is done by restraining each resulting new pair of tops is performed so that ALL tops are on the same horizontal plane. To get them to stay down, they can be tied to the main stem, tied to the pot or use something rigid like insulated copper wire looped over the branch on one end and anchored by inserting the other end into the soil (as shown earlier in this thread).

This is a very good description of ML here Yankee. Loving this thread. Thought about SeaRock when I saw the this BBxNL thread as he does have some going too. I see a scientific partenership in the making ;)

Thanks for the feedback KC. Always worry that I missed the point or worse yet guide someone else in the wrong direction! Appreciate the sanity check.

The new mains are coming along nicely. Still hopeful that she'll be ready for her next top-n-train within the a week.

so I jumped on the bandwagon and did this to some bag seeds I have going outside... they were the perfect size to start training.

I also topped my WWxBB ... may try the ML on her if my test plants go well!
Glad to be apart of this thread. I really hope to learn something!
