Lyrid Meteor Shower Tonight

It's supposed to be a pretty good show tonight. With a new moon the sky should be perfect for watching the meteor shower. The Lyrid meteors are known for producing fireballs and can have up to 100 meteors per hour during its peak. Anytime after midnight go outside (if you don't have light pollution), smoke a bowl, and just relax and enjoy. We saw a few last night. One was really bright.

If I look hard enough will I see Uranus? ;-)
You'll have to look quite hard, I imagine. For the telescopists among us, this is a premier time of year to tour the brighter galaxies of the Virgo Cluster/Association. I plan to be out there with 20x90s. If it's a good might (and so far it looks promising) I should be able to see all of Markarian's Chain. cn

I just watched Tiangong-1 pass nearly overhead. It is the Chinese test article for a space station module, roughly equivalent to a Russian Salyut/Mir core. As it entered shadow near Arcturus (α Boötis), it went blue, then dark. Not a hint of yellow, which means the thousand miles west of me are cloudless and low in haze. So the hot clear weather we've been enduring will continue ... so far not a Lyrid. But Vega just broke horizon, so it's early yet ... cn

It's clear as a bell here. The temps are hovering in the upper 60's. Yay!! Perfect night. I have some tequila and a bowl of Northern Lights on standby. :p

One of the wildest experiences I had was stargazing while coming down from a psychedelic. All those extra stars ... it confounded my usually easy reading of the sky. Like those dreams I sometimes have of seeing extraordinary constellations ... cn

I need the tequila for some liquid courage. I hate going outside at night around here. It's fucking spooky as hell.
