Low Yields.....

Hello RIU,

Been running into the same problems the past few harvests. Heres some info on the set up..... 400W HPS, Soil (2-3Gal pots), Botanicare Nutrients, Temps 75-80 Humidity 40-50, Room size is about 5x3x8'

Our last harvest was 3 plants that were flowered for 9 weeks. All the plants were from seed and fimmed. The seeds were quality indica strains ordered online. The total yield was only 2 oz.

They seemed to grow great from the start of flower until week 5ish. Then bud production slowed and they didn't swell at all through the last few weeks. The smoke is awesome, crystally stinky dank nugz, but no yield.

This time around we are growing the same strain and it seems like we are encountering the same problems. The light is about 12" from the plants.

Any ideas would be great thanks alot guys we owe all we know to RIU!

Thanks!

could be tons of different things. some stuff that immediately comes to mind

- harvested too early. some strains can pack on 2x the weight in the last week. You often have to flower up to 2 weeks longer than strain info on seed banks

- light maybe too close. twelve inches is really pushing it with a 400W HPS, at some point you may be burning chlorophyll instead of promoting photosynthesis, even if your temps are ok

- wrong nutes or nute schedule - I won't even get into this one, there are so many factors

- didn't veg long enough

- pots too small. if the plants get rootbound too soon it can decrease your yield. estimate a gallon per foot of plant

- too little air exchange. this is a biggie. without enough fresh co2 they will never grow bigger. get a better fan or supplement with co2

just some guidlines. good luck

thanks for the input. we were thinking about harvesting later this time, possibly 10 or 11 weeks. hopefully that's the issue, otherwise I guess we'll have to start experimenting to narrow it down.

here's some pics, what do you think? see how the nugs never really filled in?

the first two are of our last grow. the one is from day 57 flower and the other is right after cutting.

the second two are of our current grow. the main cola and a shot of the whole plant. these are from week 6 flower.

I used to use botanicare, the whole line... AND.... it sucked for yield in both my gardens and my buddies, we switched it up to humboldt, same setups and genetics, twice the yield.... He ran GH and had the same results as well. just a thought.

That was something that we were wondering about... I think we need to fork up the 200 dollars and get a electronic ppm/ph/ ec meter. Were considering switching the brand nutrients next go around.

also, we were just thinking that... we haven't been shaking up the nutrients before using them. do you think it's possible that the nutes could have separated and settled in the container? maybe the sugars or something? we don't pour them out, we use a dropper to measure the amounts and add it to a gallon container. any thoughts??

it's world of seeds medical afghan kush x skunk... it's an indica. we also thought about limitations of the strain/400w. but we were thinking if you could produce "1 g per watt," as the saying goes, we are failing horribly lol. we are most definitely going to switch nutes next time around, most likely to foxfarm or house & garden. thanks for your helpful reply!

5X3X8 and your using 2-3 gal pots, I would say get some 5 gal. containers grow em till their 18" and then flower. Bigger plants mean bigger yield

add some side lights on the side, or some reflectors that aim up at the plant. side lighting is key man. just light from the top isnt enough. Bigger pots better nutes and maybe some LST on the next grow. I had a clone that i rooted and vegged for about a week after that. Then flowered it and at 1 ft tall it gave me over a quarter and that was only a 150w HPS. Should be pissed with those results. Next grow maybe do a DWC or something

Update! We're idiots hahaha. We shined a light into the nutes to see half clear half deep brown mixture... so we shook them all up really well and made a new batch of nutes. For some reason, we didn't notice how pale the nutes were in comparison to this time, and now they're coffee colored. So hopefully that was the problem and it's not too late, since we're on week 6. Hopefully they put a lot of weight on during the last few weeks. The plants do look great though, healthy and resiny. We'll keep you updated with any changes in bud production! Always shake your nutes!! lol
