Low Odor Strains/Phenotypes

Hello everybody. Just finishing up with my first bag seed grow and for some reason the odor coming from the maturing flower is very very low. Not the usually stankiness. Is there anything that would cause this besides genetics? Maybe how it was grown? Im really curious and would really like to get everyone's input if possible. Thanks

It could be how it was grown or genetics, or a little of both. Genetics play a big roll in it, but there are also ways to feed it to make smells come out much stronger. If the genetics aren't there however you won't be able to do much to get a smell to come out. Some plants just don't have any terps and it depends on the linage.

There is also curing too. If you don't fully dry them out and store them properly the smell can get ruined instead of getting enhanced during curing. Usually if you cure stuff right the smells will get stronger and even change a little. If you store them too wet they will get kinda musky and possibly smell more like grass or regular plants instead.

Most likely it’s just genetics. Some growing conditions and stuff can effect smell an taste to some extent but usually unless you completely fucked up the drying and/or curing process plants that do not smell or have less smell an taste are mostly due to genetics. especially if the plant has had no smell throughout the whole of flower.

If it stank in flower but when harvested and dried the smell has vanished or decreased then it’s very possible it’s something you did that caused it or the terpenes in that plant are extremely volatile and basically get cooked off easier.

nutes can effect smell an taste too but that’s not so much on a level where you will go from zero smells to super stanky just by changing your nutes, but they certainly can make a difference.

I’d probably go with genetics for your reason tho especially if it’s a bag seed plant.

One last thing.

has the plant even finished? It’s also possible the terpenes have just not really started to produce yet in the buds/trichomes if it still has a few weeks left.
I jus did a banana cake from in house genetics that took about 10+ weeks to finish. The plant had virtually no smell to its buds all through flower right up until about week 7+ then it just started to pack on a small amount of skunk funk an each week it got stronger and stronger till it was/is the absolute stinkiest plant out of the lot. It reeks and I really didn’t expect anywhere near this level of smell an taste, super pungent skunk funk. Similar to exodus cheese but less earthy. The platinum zooks I did too was very similar with almost no smell until the final 2-3 weeks flower where that also is super skunky but not as pungent as the banana cake. It was jus slightly piney and hashy during most of flower tho and is a big difference to what I expected.

Yeah it was my first grow so its quite possible i fucked something up. Had lighting problems in the beginning along with plenty of ph bullshit. It really hasnt smelled at all through the entire flower process except hints here and there. Its weird because the buds are super sticky and the hairs are almost all brown except for some of the upper bud sites. The bud i got it from didnt smell very much, but im guessing its a little bit of both. I definitely could have gone longer too..Hmm i appreciate all of the input so far. Thank you. I want to use this to optimize my next grow which i am in the process of doing now.

Oh and to add this, ive been selectively harvesting certain branches that i think are more done then the others. I think i might have bleached some of the top buds because they are still sort of white as opposed to the more bottom buds that are super sticky and covered in amber trichomes and hairs.
