Opinion "highly doubts" it's russet mites, so my opinion on the subject is mute. Let him keep chasing ghosts, until the mites destroy them all.
To answer your question, you need at least a 50X scope to see them, 200X is ideal, but I can clearly see multiple different types of damage, that they are causing. I use to get them pretty bad on my tomatoe plants outside. I chased ghost deficiencies for months, until I finally realized what was happening.

@helluvagrower Plutionium is staying mute but apparently you can see the mites if you get high enough power magnification.

Scope the underside of the damaged leaves, right along the veins, with at least a 50X magnification. You will see them. You haven't heard about them yet, because most of the people on this forum, that know what they are doing, rarely help. The rest are quick to give bad advice, based off of pictures they find on the internet and have no actual real world experience, with the problems users may be having.
I just happen to have experience with almost every pest, that likes to munch on plants. Been growing various plants with aeroponics, for the last 20 years.

Yep, will kill them deader then a door nail and has no effect on your plants at all.
I use it as a preventative, during the vegative stage, on everything I grow now.
