Looking for better potency

I'm on my second harvest.
Friends say my bud doesn't have to potency you get from other top shelf grade A bud . Genetics aren't my problem . Do you think that's pheno type or harvest time , early or late.
The buds look and smell fabolous. The genetics are great . I had root rot problems my last harvest . I havest 7/ 8 week purple urkle s1 and white widow from ghs week 9.5 using the pistol color method. This harvest I plan going by trichome color with microscope.
Will every plant get you good and high or are just some out of this world with most being blahhh.

There are many factors that affect potency. Obviously genetics plays a substantial role. Also harvest timing is crucial. Waiting until tricombs are all cloudy with a few Amber to harvest is when thc is at the peak. Keep growing and every run you do will go better and better as you learn more and refine your growing style. Best of luck

Get better genetics but just popping a couple beans you will need to be lucky to find a ‘top shelf’ femae

My genetics are pretty good you ask me . Humboldt csi and green house seeds are not bad .
My question is ever plant going to get your high enough that it's better than just mids or am i looking for a specific pheno.
My trichomes where all cloudy with 5 percent of that amber my last harvest when I looked at few . I didn't look at all the plants.

Potency does not = top shelf. It's too bad that THC level has become the main criteria for quality cannabis by so many.
You are correct .
Will ever plant grown properly be better than just mid grade buds or is it a pheno I'm looking for . I need to know to scrap my current clones or search through all that I kept.

If you have good genetics it's as simple as keeping plants healthy from seed to harvest. Harvesting too early is probably the biggest reason for the final product not reaching its full potential. Overfeeding is probably second.

Got any pics of your plants before harvest?

Back in the 90s, White Widow was eye blistering, and had a killer taste, and smell. REEKED.... Its in a sorry state now. But it was also an extremely low yielder. White Russian, and AK47 were also extremely potent, but have also suffered genetic crisis. Same for Kali Mist. But there are some killer 90s Kali hybrid genetics around. Relic just dropped some crosses today, or yesterday.

White Widow is a staple strain that has been around for a long time and is a great plant if grown right?

WW used to be a killer strain, but is nothing like it used to be, like many strains. Sensi NL5/Haze is Nothing like it used to be. Sensi NL5 is no longer advertised at NL5, just NL. Sensi Mr Nice is junk, Sk1. Afghani #1. AK47, White Russian. They lost many of the genetics over time to fires, raids, and diseases.
Thats one reason I tell people to get AKBeanBrains Gear, Relic, Connoisseur, Dynasty, Nature Farm, Swami, bluegrassskunklord, Lucky Dog and some others as they have many of these old school genetics, and more on the way. Connoissuer IMHO is probably the best place to get Haze hybrids, and Super Silver Haze hybrids. SSH brings huge structure, and fast growth to anything its bred to. Connoisseur, and AKBB also share genetics

No matter the genetics an early harvest and issues during a grow effect potency and flavor

Best practice dial in your grow
I would say that genetics and strain matters also. Once I got clone of my friend she said its Dame Blanche, plant was great and yielded the most, but the weed was just like crap in comparism with other plants that run. Tried once and give everthing to friends, sub par quality. It is also partially a subjective sight.

You definitely need to look for specific phenotypes. Every seed is gonna be a little different for the most part and you need to find the one that holds the genes for potancy as well as flavor and smell and yield, and structure :). It can be a process to work through seeds until you find a keeper that is REALLY a keeper and not just ok.

How healthy you keep the plants will effect the final outcome, your environment will effect how that goes.

The biggest thing I see new growers do that negatively effects their harvest is cutting plants too early. Like many growers harvest weeks too early which will decrease yield, flavor and potency.

Don’t pay any attention to how long breeders say plants take. I stopped counting weeks years ago because it’s irrelevant. Keep your plants healthy and grow them until they tell you they are finished. Don’t just look at the pistols, or the trichomes, you need to look at the whole plant and all the signs it gives you about it’s maturity.

Here is a basic guide to plant maturity at harvest time. Before even thinking about harvesting next time take a look at this and see if your plant is actually showing you all these signs.

The signs of ripeness are pretty standard.

First a few of the pistils begin turning color and start receding. Your plant is just starting to ripen. Depending on the strain you could still have two months to go. We're just starting this journey.

Two to four weeks later you'll notice that most of the pistils(80%+) have now changed color and curled back into the bud. It's frosty, way bigger than it was a few weeks ago, and smells dank! It's time, right? Not a chance killer. Patience is a virtue

Over the next 2-3 weeks it doesn't look much different, maybe a little more swelling in the calyxes, and the rest of the pistils change over, but the stems ars starting to bend under the weight of the buds. These ladies are putting on weight and now the buds are doing their final ripening. You should have supports on your plant to prevent stems from snapping.

Now you begin looking at trichomes, on the CALYX not the leaves, and harvest according to your preference. When looking at trichomes it’s essential to look at them from the side. The bulbous heads can magnify the opaque stalk under it giving a FALSE idea of ripeness. Looking from the side allows you to more accurately see the condition of the resin in the trichome head.

There is still no rush to harvest, the window just opened, and you have several weeks before you MIGHT start having to think about it possibly beginning to get too ripe. It takes WEEKS for plants to mature not days.

It is very easy to harvest a plant to early.

It is very hard to harvest a plant to late. I’ve never seen someone accidentally wait too long.
