Liter of Light

So I came across this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liter_of_Light) a while ago and just found it again and was wondering if anyone had tested its actual effect on the quality of light that comes out at the other end.

I feel like this could be used to focus the light of a large amount of LED's into pretty much whatever form/pattern you want by just joining two panels of plastic together with plastic weld and some water and bleach in between them. Then you just have to surround the edges with strips of LED's and cover all of the surface area that you don't want emit light with mylar or some other reflective material to assure that the light just bounces around in there until it finds the bit that you left open. I might be setting up a new grow cabinet soon so I kinda want to try this out, but that being said I don't have the equipment to measure and record a test to do the calculations to see if it would work before I spend the money on a full sized 2.2m x 1.4m sheet of plastic. So yeah is anyone with the equipment willing to or has anybody already tested this?

I know there are tests out there specifically on the liter of light but thats using one shitty LED and the bottles are all different sizes and surface area would be a bit annoying to calculate for random plastic bottles. Also all they say is that it produces about as much light as a 40W incadescent bulb which I know is horseshit for growing but again thats only one shitty LED and also they don't say anything about the quality of light for instance I know your not actually gaining any power as its the same amount of light I just want to know the effect it has on the lumens, PAR and colour temperature. Obviously it will vary depending on a whole bunch of things but I can't find any data on this method at all and I'm too broke to get the equipment on it so just sort of any indication of what might happen based on a real test would be cool and if it works it'll be cool to see what people do with it provided it's not shit haha

You'll lose a good bit of light when diffusing it through water. Or anything really.

Same reason we like reflectors over lenses. More photons from the source on the canopy.


Cool concept though, wonder how much free light you could get doing the whole ceiling of the grow room like that.

Yeah that's what I thought, obviously you could try to use the smallest amount of water and bleach possible but still I hear you. But I was thinking if I abuse the concept a little and just use a jig saw to cut the perimeter of the plastic sheets to make it shaped kind of like a saw-tooth blade shape I could fit a ridiculous amount of LED's on it and maybe by focusing that I would be able to reach a viable solution for light.

Also I just realised you could relatively easily make a cupboard with this and have light coming in from just about everywhere. Oh the possibilities if neither time nor money were an issue haha
