So I have a general lighting question I have a luminaire series by hydrofarm 1000w ballast and matching hood. That I bought used off of craigslist. The Ballast says its for HPS says nothing about MH. The guy I got it from said he was selling it for a friend and that his friend never really used it. just to start his outdoor plants inside using a MH bulb.
It came with 2 bulbs .One Mh (the one I tested it with) and a HPS that wont light up.


The problems Im haveing is it wont light up the HPS bulb only the Mh one.
After being on for about 15min the MH light dimms down. Doesnt go out just dims down what could be the prob be?

So im not sure if the ballast is broken or if the bulb is. the man said the HPS was never used only the MH.

My guess is it's your ballast. The reason I think this is because your MH bulb dims while running and your ballast wont run the HPS. Now the Lumateks do flicker a little bit especially the older ones. So if it's flickering it may be the bulb but if it's dimming that doesnt sound right. Also how old is the MH bulb? The problem is you're having multiple symptoms that are pointing at different issues. That's why I'm guessing you haven't gotten an answer. The best course of action for you would be to go to your local hydro shop who is cool and ask them if they'll test your ballast and bulbs. Most places will do it no problem. That is how you will know for sure man. I did that same thing you did when I first started, bought a 600w HPS system off of craigslist and the ballast flickered. I ended up buying a nextgen new 2 months later and never regretted it. Keep it up.
