Lighting for Seedlings Question

Hello,

I have six sprouted seeds I am preparing to plant tonight, and I was wondering if it will be ok to put them under my 400w metal halide light? When I have germinatedseeds in the past I have just left them right in the window and then planted them outdoors. This is my first indoor grow from scratch, and per usual I have been reading lots of contradcting info on lighting requirements for seedlings. I have one plant I am revegging under the Halide on an 18/6 cycle, so I was thinking I could keep the little girls right there on a shelf where they are not directly under the light....any advice??

You could if you put it far enough away. Honestly going to home depot and grabbing 2 t8 fixtures will save you power and you will always have seedling/baby lights - Its about 20 bucks a fixture and 20 bucks for a 10 pack of lights.

Alright, I can do that and set up a little nursery, I have to go to home depot tomorrow anyways...Thanks, do you know how many inches away the lights should be from the plant?

With t5 they can be very close, almost close enough to touch. But seedlings don't really need any light until they sprout.

This is what I did for tonight, the light shuts off in 20 min anyways, and tomorrow I'm going to the grow shop and Home Depot....

Yea the t8s can be very very close. even running 24 hours a day they are always cool to the touch.

Def vegging with floura anything is better than a 400 in my exp when they are young. Young Plants seems to like that softer veg light. But they do like a nice super blue 1000w also when they are older.

They will be fine like that until you get the new fixtures. Is that a Cocker Spaniel, great dogs! Only one small suggestion, animals can bring spider mites into the grow area. You may wanna try to keep him/her away.

Yep, that's Barney my baby, I usually do try to keep him outta there just because he's kinda clumsy too, but old faithful follows me everywhere I go. Guess I'm going to have to lay down the law and keep him out from now on, thanks for the info!
