Shouldn't need to, some will say more light is better - meh. HID means what it means. High Intensity Discharge - HPS and MH light penetrates canopies pretty well in my experience. If you're having problems with lower branches not developing, work on some canopy management 1st. Tying back, splitting leaves, etc.

Actually now that I'm thinking about this let me clarify the thing with lighting. Your 600 watt provides plenty of light for your growspace. We're not even bringing plants into the picture, no matter if you have 1 plant or 50 in that space, the light is sufficient. Once you get your lumens per square foot or watts per square foot figured out, size of the plants doesn't matter. They are having plenty of energy provided to them.
