Light meters? Lux lumen?

Hey, I was unsure where to post this one, but this is my fav section.

What is the deal with lighting meters? I want to know when my bulbs are loosing health without having to see them explode or otherwise suck.

I have found lux meters, but I don't know how many lux's a 600watt puts off for example.

Can anyone here explain to me where and how to go about measuring my hps lights?

It's just a conversion lumen to lux.
you can download a conversion calculator that will do alll that for you.
1 lumen ft2 = 10.76391 Lux

the lumen output is basically how much light comes out of the bulb... if you focus it all on 1 sq ft it would be whatever that the actual bulb lumens per sq ft... the lumens per sq ft will be different for everyone - depending on how many sq ft you are trying to cover with it...

lux is lumens per sq meter so its a little different...

the brightest recording for sunlight i found was 140,000 lux - about 13,000 lumens/sq ft.
