Light meter

Would using a light meter help in determining when to change the bulb in my 400w HPS? Or would it not measure the plant range of usable light?

And I'm talking about a cheap camera light meter. I don't know of vegetative light meters.

the meter would have to range up to 10,000 foot candles (lumens per square foot), not sure a typical photographic light meter goes high enough

The meter you need costs more than a bulb....HPS generally don't loose that many lumens over their life compared to MH. I'd wait until it starts looking really black on the ends of the arc tube or if you ever catch it cycling. Or you can calculate the hours you have on it vs it's expected life.

Depending on your camera, you could use it (the camera) as a rough lux/ft. candle meter itself. A light value (LV) of about 20 equates to about 10k foot candles. With a little math you can obtain the light intensity.

Personally, I use a portable lux meter for recording light intensity. Its a great unit that can help determine relative lux/ft candle.

will that also give me a K reading

K reading is light or color temperature - not intensity. You can change the K value of your camera's white balance using cards, but I don't think you can use the camera to take a reading. You will need a PAR sensor or other photon sensitive equipment that can distinguish light wavelengths.
