Lesson Learned - Don't Trust Everything You read

This thread is a bit funny as it seems everyone is stating their replies on concrete non wavering facts/information... but we have to look at the reality of the situation. Sure you do not need a ph pen when growing in soil, but I would make sure that you look at what your local water department reports at their ph level as this is not the same through out. Some places are great and ph around the high 6's low 7's. Other places will have ph up near 10. It depends on where you are and what you are using. RO is completely different as it usually ph's out around 6.5 or so. (it should anyway). Super soil is great in certain places, but needs adjusting if ph is off. You will find out the first time you do not ph and you get ph lockout... it sucks. The fox farm schedule recommends ph'ing your water when feeding.. Super soil done right will balance out ph.. but not sure in what ranges it balances out at... ie 5.0 to 8.0???? Would like to know that range.. I will be finding out when I mix it in with my girls when transplanting from solo cups. Sorry about your grow... always take things with a grain of salt and maybe only use as a reference for learning? Good luck on your future grows!

Fuck the PH test kit...get a digital PH meter! Saves a lot of headache!!
I have spent over $200 on digital ph testers and they have all failed.
I now use the ph drip tester kit that i used to calibrate those stupid digital testers.
If you can see colors well, they are very accurate.

If you use hydro/coco, the lucas formula needs no ph unless your tapwater is really weird.

Just the other day, I saw two people on here saying they don't adjust the pH of their water, in hydro.
The terrible thing was that no one else called them out on it.
I tried to talk a little shit, maybe get them to think about what they were saying (and even doing! :(), but I didn't pursue it for long and just chalked it up to me being really really high (just made a bunch of hash because I had too much weed after harvest this round to even trim it all :D) and maybe I misread them.
Saw the thread again later, nope, they were serious.
I was stupi-baffled.
I didn't pH my first hydro grow :hump:
Just used foxfarm grow and tigerbloom. 2 tsp per gallon in an ebb/flow. Most liquid nutrients have buffers and if your res is big enough, the pH shouldn't fluxuate a lot. Yielded like 4oz+trim under a 250w hps. Next grow we got pH testers , fed the same way, and yielded about the same. Obviously I've got more sophisticated equipment now, running a bigger room. But honestly the pH meter is just to make sure things aren't getting out of wack. After adding nutes I'm running around 5.9. Next week at the res change it's typically around 6.5.

In my experience, pH issues really only arise when you are:
feeding too strong
feeding too many different bottles (i.e. not realizing that protekt makes pH skyrocket)
too small of a res/too long without changes
have bacteria issues.

Most nutes are designed so when you add them at the appropriate strength, they end up around 6pH in tapwater.

Did your mom pH any of the water for the plants in your backyard? Do your sprinklers pH the water for your lawn? I really think if your pH is that low then you're way overfeeding. Again, just my .02. I suppose it's all situational. I just don't like people saying you "HAVE" to pH. Because if you're feeding reasonably, you really don't.

no ph pen here, just plain supersoil and water from the tap that has proven to be ok ,... or else I wouldnt be smoking what I am smoking :eyesmoke:
so, keep ya fecking supersoil and move to a new state and see how you get on..your just lucky and thats all there is to it, i use ionic and i don't have to ph , so fecking what...that is so shit info...if you ph /ec/ppm you know what is needed if anything............ its better to know where you stand with your grow and it can make it a good yield or a shit one as simple as that.. sorry if im being a bit off its pmt time so feck off

ph'ing in soil is worthless ime.. soil is a great buffer between ph, so no need to ph water for soil grows.. two of the best growers on this site both agree that ph'ing is retarded in soil.. ask uncle ben or fdd2black if they own a ph meter, both will lol at you.. love them or hate them, you can't say both of those dudes don't grow trees..
imo, more people have more issues because they're worried about ph, adjust things up or down all the time trying to correct things.. this brings on major problems imo.. even if the ph is high or low, plants will adapt to it over time, by adjusting it ever two seconds that stresses out the plants and does more harm then good..
as far as i hydro, i won''t comment as i'm a dirt bagger..

oh yah, my fox farm nutes usually bring my ph down about 1.5 ph points or so, that's when i used to use a meter and checked.

I use my own version of super soil. I don't have to ph anything because I have my mix ready to go. For people who don't know what their soil's ph is then, i'd strongly advise them to get a meter. And checking water stats also. But, once you have it dialed in, no need.

Yep, many pH ups are sodium based. Not a good thing to dumping into soil/soiless mixes. One of the most abused additives in soil grows imo.....

are you are speaking of the supersoil organic mix in the brown bag bought at your local Screwitup Depot? sorry, I don't like the store. But I love supersoil. it is 100% organic mulch with no added nutes. it is very airy, but holds moisture well. I have used only this for all of my grows. All you need to do is add moderate nutes hear and there and you are set. CON IS THAT I ALWAYS HAVE ROOT GNATS FROM IT.
On the other hand, I agree with what many are saying, if you can get things dialed in better, it doesn't matter if it is nutes, soil, lights, or any number of things, you will have a better, more potent, and bigger harvest.
for the record, I have never tested the ph of my water. I look at my plant, use common sense, cross reference pics found on the internet, and ask questions.
I think sometimes we forget that due to differences in location, available grow area, etc. One persons dialed in proven techniques may not work so hot for someone else. Grow wisely, and learn from our mistakes. there is always a better grow just around the corner.

I'm curious. Water bottles or 5 gallon filler-stations are always going to have a good ph, correct? I'm just wondering if adding the nutes call for a ph test? Using soil anyway, but things have to be perfect. =p And uh, plants have not been fed ever, just watered, entering week 3 of veg. Is that a problem? What should I do?

Can anyone link me to a fertilizer guide?
