Could I wait until it starts budding to buy a carbon filter or is there any reason I should buy one now?
A foot tall & they start stinkin'. Get it now. Get a Phresh, Phat, Can man, Can Lite. BLACK OPS, or Foothill Filter from ebay/Amazon. Heard a few things about mountain air but not enough. Don't get a cheap one despite some reviews you might read claiming otherwise.

So how often do carbon filters need to be replaced, also I'm assuming some of the smell is going to leak out of the bottom right? As far as the fan goes would you say a 60$ off amazon would work?

@Weedman1108 you can wait on the filter until a week or 2 into flowering (in most cases). With the fan, you need to make sure you don't buy a booster fan, they don't have enough push for a filter, but are fine for an intake. If electrical savings are priority then think about getting the Hyperfans. They are not cheap but less than half the wattage of most comparable fans. They also come with a dimmer. 2 of the 8" fans are running at about 100 watts total, while my older maxcan fan with a cheap 8" booster was drawing over 200 watts. My intake Hyperfan is only drawing 20-30 watts.
So a 6" Hyperfan and a 4" inch booster would work great with some headroom incase you need a little extra.

I was just planning on not having an intake fan, because I figured the bottom vents would be enough intake, are you saying the fan I have linked above wouldn't work for an exhaust fan connected to the filter?
