LED feedback: week 4

For those of you interested in the experiences of new LED users who have no "agenda" and which are hype free, I am very happy with my new 90 watt UFO for my admittedly very small grow. I don't know about the claims that these lights are better than 300-400W HIDs, but so far my LED seems to be outperforming my (admittedly modest) previous lighting (detailed next paragraph) in this new grow.

My garden is only 2.5 square feet and I am only growing 2 autoflowering lowryder 2 plants. I have done this same (hydro) grow before a few times using my old lighting which was a 150W HPS combined with a 5000 lumen CFL array (about 21000 lumens total).

At the beginning of week 4, my new batch of plants is about an inch shorter, but has more nodes, leaves, and initial bud sites than my previous grows had at the same time interval. The root development also seems better so far, but that's more difficult to make an accurate comparison to be honest. There seem to be more leaves, greener color, and the plant just looks more healthy with 2+ weeks of LED overall so far to me.

I do not have meaningful pictures because I do not normally photograph my plants and have nothing from previous grows to compare the new shots to even if I took pics of the new plants and figured out how to post them.

I will avoid using any brand names or listing distributors of my UFO to avoid any appearance of promoting any product or distributor, but I will tell the specs of it for anybody who might be interested in trying a similar product.

Lights are focused to 120 degrees of coverage:

10x 1W Blue wavelength: 455 nm
10x 1W Orange wavelength: 610 nm
10x 1W White wave: full-spectrum / wide-kelvin
[/FONT]

Note: I have seen a video on youtube where one company shows the 630 red spectrum to be better than my 660 and I have read various claims that orange and white LEDs are wasted wattage. I cannot refute this as I have only tried this one LED so far and can only compare it to my previous lighitng scheme for the same garden setup. It's possible other lights might be better than mine, but so far IMO this particular 90W LED seems to be outperforming my old 150W HPS and 5000 lumen CFL combined setup for my small grow space.

Also, the new LED light generates much less heat than even just my CFL array alone used to (no appreciable heat at all really) - and the 150W HPS was hotter yet. Even with great ventilation my old lighting used to increase the heat in my enclosed grow space about 7 degrees above ambient and the LED doesn't increase the temp at all.

Up until now I have also been using the LED at about 12" above my plants (the same height I used with my HID) although I am quite sure I could easily lower it to 6" or less as there is just no appreciable heat at all from it and it would still cover both my plants adequately at their current size.

I'll try to update my progress every week or so and especially compare the final results for anyone interested.

Additional notes: I did use just the CFL array alone for the first week of this grow, because I read that flourescent lighting is supposedly best for initial seedlings. I replaced the 5000 lumen CFL array with the LED after 7 days of growth (plus 2 more days sprouting with no light at all).

My initial impression is that these LEDs are great for small grows and where heat is an issue (closed grow cabinets like mine). While their light quality so far seems comparable to HIDs maybe 2x their size at least, I kind of doubt their coverage area would be as great as HIDs of those wattages? I am also going to begin lowering the light closer to the plants little by little during flowering (which has already begun) and will be interessted to see if this improves performance further...

I hope this helps some of you and look forward to posting more as I learn more...

I had 4 LED panels and sold them but not because there was anything wrong; I was in Alaska and did not want to ship them back to the lower 48. I recently bought 4 more, 2 blue and 2 red. If I had not seen such great results I would have used my 400w MH. The plants *love* vegging under LED's.

Thanks for putting that. I just ask that you don't get discouraged by trolls and keep posting updates. Usually these threads never get finished because of too much negativity.

You're right about that Josh. I bet that 90% of the "experts" have never even seen one. They probably think they are like the little LED's in a flashlight or something; they are more like looking at the sun through a colored filter. I love them for other reasons too; I live in a hot climate so they don't add to the problem. Also, I can't even tell a difference in my electric bill running these.

Any pics of your setup?
No, I'm sorry but I've never taken any pics of my grows. My only digital camera is an old phone and it's pics suck, and to be honest I have never learned how to post pictures in forums even if I wanted to.

It's a simple setup using a sterilite storage cabinet that is 2' wide by 18" deep and 6' tall (I only use < 3' of height for these small plants because they only get 2' tall), painted flat white on the inside for reflection and a pair of 3.5 inch fans venting about 80cfms of air, with only passive air intake. I'm using a small hydro system that combines DWC and drip emitters. I also have a small 6" fan in there for circulation and to strengthen the stems.

The whole system only cost under $300 to build and it is more than adequate for my very modest needs. I'm sure with 1-2 regular plants (instead of the autoflowering dwarfs I use) it could put out 4-8oz per cycle, but I only get 2-3 with 2 LR2s and that lasts me over a year. LOL I use glade plugins for the first 4-5 weeks for odor control and add a quart of ona pro gel for the last weeks and to dry the harvest. I've been wanting to try LR2 x AK47, but those plants supposedly smell a lot worse (LR2s smell bad enough LOL) and I've been afraid to try them thus far.

Oh, and if anybody cares, I strongly suggest feminized seeds for auto-flowering varieties, because otherwise you end up with over 80% males because of the ruderalis genetics - so feminized is the way to go with those IMO.

what are the temps off leds, how may watt led compares to a 1000w hps?
My 90W LED in only 5 cubic feet of grow space (2 x 1.5 x 2) with 80CFM of ventilation has ZERO heat above ambient 6" below the light. ZERO. The room is 70-75 degrees and the temp in the cab is exactly the same. When I was using just a 150W HPS and 5000 lumen CFL in the same cabinet, the temp was always about 7 degrees above ambient in that small grow space...BIG difference.

I would be interested to hear how the LEDs perform in flowering. Veg is easy to beat HID. Flowering is the weakness of LED.

Thanks so much for sharing. Keep us posted on height and dry weight.

I have to agree with you botwin; I prefer my HPS in flowering - but I did my last autoflower grow completely with LED's, blue for vegging and red for flowering. It was a seed run so I was not concerned with making big fat buds. ...well ok, I was a little. :)

Unfortunately this test has been prematurely terminated:

The huge winter storm blew out my power for almost two full days...the hydro shut down and the house got down to under 40 degrees and the babies had no light for two days. My plants now look horrible and I am doubting they will recover. Even if they do recover, it will no longer be a fair comparison to my previous HID grows, so it will fail as a comparative experiment even if the plants somehow survive. I will not be able to re-start this experiment until probably May, as I am having guests in my house for a week at the end of April and would not be able to conceal weed growing in my house from live-in guests for a full week. heh

I do hope to retry this experiment later in the year - probably with LR2 x AK47 seeds or perhaps with Kali Mist instead (although it would not be a comparison with Kali Mist as all my previous grows have been auto-flowering LR2). Sorry to disappoint those of you who expressed interest in this experiment. =(
