No ones really doing that. The manufactures would love you too, but no one is. That goes for all HPS bulbs.
I'm sorry, this is an ignorant blanket statement. Not only can you not know, but I'm personally aware that most sizeable facilities are religious about their lamp replacement intervals because they know how important it is.
That does add up.
It is also true that both lamp AND reflector degrade over time and thus both need regular replacement. Relatively fewer replace their reflector on the recommended schedule.
They grow good weed, but Gavita advocates hate to talk about HVAC costs attendant to their operation, another glaring deficiency in overall systems performance. It costs a lot of AC tonnage and electricity to remove all that heat emitted from a 550 degree oven element!
Even CMH/CDM/LEC lamps produce better quality and have longer replacement intervals, yet their quality of product results still pale in comparison to COB LED.
Do a life cycle cost analysis and COB LED is already less expensive- and that's not taking better quality into account at all, which I assure you means a great deal to their bottom line.
More to consider; utilities are handing out cash incentives to operators for installing energy efficient lighting, often several hundred dollars per fixture. It's cost effective for utilities to do this instead of buying more power on the spot market or worse, attempting to build more generation capacity, both extremely costly options.
Once there's a direct subsidy like that, the choice is simple- and the barrier of high cost of acquisition is no more.
