Q and A about heat on LEC315W :

Question:
Hello, I have a question concerning the heat this light puts off. I see that none of the CMH units have an air cooled option. Do they run that much cooler where they don't need to be air cooled? Thank you

Answers:
  • These lights give off approximately the same amount of heat as a 400W HPS. This reflector was designed to maximize spectrum and does not have glass.

They are more expensive for initial cost but quickly pay back those costs from electric usage, that AT600 is a 1000w hps EQUIVILENT, it will grow as much marijuana as a 1000w light and it pulls around 650-700 watts not to mention the quality of buds is higher.
I'm in an area where I can't get them tested, thinking of grabbing one of these though for testing, haven't researched them enough to decide whether they're straight up/for real. In my own experience, the LED buds do seem to frost up more, even more so than the LEC's but hard to tell if the overall quality and terpenes are higher with the LED's without testing, no significant/noticeable difference but the latest LED mixed spectrum harvest from my small breeding tent was the frostiest buds I've pulled yet. Greengenes test against hps showed some differences in overall terpenes favouring the Apache's, haven't seen any comparison's between LED's and these LEC's.

I want to get my buds lab tested but I live in Colorado and only dispensaries can get lab tested here so pretty lame but I want to do a comparison grow a51 LED vs HPS vs BS ion 8 but can't do lab testing so will have to be more tested by stoners. EDIT: looked at that link how accurate is that thing , that's pretty much exactly what I need !

Can you use the LEC in any hood you want?
Sure, you may have to modify it but as long as you can DIY and fit the correct socket (T12) or adapter you can do whatever you want, no different than hps or hid. As I mentioned earlier in the thread though, unless you have an existing hood/reflector to match the quality of these hoods that come with the Sun Systems units, they'd be pretty difficult to match. If you're thinking of reducing the height overhead that might be worthwhile looking at DIY though.

They look pretty cool, I think they're just being released to market though, will be looking into them further, got that link a few weeks ago in another thread and looked great if they do what they claim.

All I have is some fans blowing in the general direction and that's enough to dissipate the heat within 2-3F of the equivalent LED wattage I had in there. I think the key is room height, with limited height I think you'd be needing some additional cooling over LED's.

Yea,I think they hit the nail on the head with this light/hood setup..I think anything bigger, will stretch the light to far..IMO

Heat, like you say is about the size of your room..

I plan to run the few I got,the same way I run hps with cross over lighting,in a open room,to see how they do.running them this way,I think I will push them to cover 3.5 x 3.5.
At around 18-20 inches above the tops.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking smaller scale with my two LEC's, running them side by side should provide some bleeding/overlap. Maybe not so much in my case as I'm running different configs in plant size/quantities under each light, but even then it should help and stretch the footprint to maybe 3x7'. I have a bunch of shorter plants going in now, so I'll be playing with different configs to see what coverage I can get using both fixtures. My biggest priority now that I've seen what these can do is to build a bigger veg room to feed the flower room better. I'd love to run a full 3x6' or 3x7' with 2 lights but will have to run them staggered until I build a bigger veg area. Have a spot set aside and plan to tackle it this winter.

Thanks for the link, I got the original link from another member that said he had a test/demo unit, can't remember the thread though. When I first went to the site to bookmark it, it just didn't look right so just linked it and was going to research them, seemed a bit off somehow, sounds like my gut was right, looks like a scam, cheers.

http://hydrobuilder.com/og-grow-light-hood-air-cooled-8.html This is the best reflector on the market right now probably would be badass with that LEC in it.
I'm a fan of vertical reflectors, but you need to remember that bulb placement is key; usually designed for 1000w . With smaller wattage bulbs(315w cmh) they need a mogul-extender to place the arc in the center for optimal reflection. The sunsystems/greenbeam kits have reflectors designed specifically for it==== probably better performance overall?? IDK

mine is in a silver edition 3x3 which actually measures out to 3.4x3.4 and it covers wall to wall with no issues.
Have you run that size footprint in flowering? I can see mine covers a bigger area but I question even at 3x3 whether this is optimal coverage and intensity. I'm thinking if you stretch the footprint too much there's a point at which you'll loose intensity and yield/density.

that's the only foot print i have ever flowered it in, it is strictly a flowering tent. i wouldn't stretch it much further then that though.

just pulled the trigger on another 315w fixture and silver edition 3x3.

Sweet, perfect footprint, should do well in that space, what's the height?

I'll be trying different runs/configs by changing up number, size, height of plants to see what works best. Just threw in 6x 3Gal, 4 strains, running the two lights side-by-side, the Blue Dream is taking 36x22 or so in the 7gal pot. I've found the 3Gal fabric pots productive for the size. The smaller one's went in last night, they should reach around 24" to the top of the trellises after stretch. Will move them around and use the width up as they stretch, they're taking about 34 x 28 right now.
