I recently germinated a random seed that I found in a baggie sometime and got an incredible surprise. Basically I did the regular wet paper towel method and after a few days checked on it. At first I thought the root that had sprouted out of the seed had split or broken upon pushing against the paper towel in growth because it looked like 3 individual roots were coming out of the bottom, or something really random that I couldn't quite see let alone diagnose I had a similar problem of one snapping before and it grew just fine so I said screw it and just planted it. I could see one of the first leaves popping out of the shell so I was expecting some noticeable growth in the upcoming 3 days but there wasn't any so being the nosy impatient person I am I had to take a look. I found the seed casing with the first leaves inside an gently pushed at the seed casing with a pencil. When the seed casing began to move and showed signs of coming off I continued. This was where it got weird. The entire seed casing CONTAINING the first leaves and all the other stuff that usually remains inside the seed casing until it grows slid clean off the root that was planted into the ground. The was no snap, so pulling or anything, and the root that was left after having slid out was white and pointed, as if it were the other way around and this root belonged at the bottom. I then HAD to dig it up and see for myself. The root had grown leaves the wrong way round, it has totally abandoned the seed casing, the first leaves and everything that remained inside and has grown a pair of independent leaves on the end of the root that usually would've just remained a root. Here in the photos you can see those leaves, along with one other pointy bit which is the end of the root where it has split to allow the leaves to grow out of. If anyone has any form of explanation for this I would much appreciate it as this is extremely bemusing and I haven't been able to find ANYTHING of the sorts anywhere on the internet. Not the clearest of photos but anyone with a shred of knowledge can see that this is very abnormal.
