So i have a small sproutling, and i was just wondering if i catch a wild ladybug, once my plant gets bigger can i just preemptively put the lady bug on my plant to protect it from bugs? I think it would be cool to have a lady bug living on my plant guarding it.

ive heard lots of stories about ladybugs flying into hid lights and frying... :bigjoint:

then again ive never tried it. i wonder how effective just one ladybug would be anyhow?

well im using cfls, and my plant will be small but if i have one ladybug and no bugs right now i think it will be effective at killing them if they come cause i dont think bugs come in swarms but in smaller numbers at first then spawn. and i was using one ladybug as an example, if i catch 2 im not gonna throw one out and keep the other lol.

1000 lady bugs covers 100 square feet though I suspect that's more for maintanace than a full blows infection. people usually wait until they already have a problem to grab the lady bugs so the numbers needed should be rounded up 10-20% imo

There's a nursery called Green Arrow over in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles that sells pre-fed ladybugs (1400+ per container) for around $7 USD. I'm on my second batch right now, my mites are under control at the moment with them.
