Keep Your Blue (And Maybe Orange) Lights On During Lights Off?! Has Eddie R Lost It?

Was just poking around his mjgrowers.com sight and just read these two little paragraphs:

"When blue light is turned on during the dark period, plants photosynthesize but their flowering isn’t affected. This results in more growth as the plants produce more sugars. Before LED lights it was difficult to create a pure blue light. Instead, most of the time other spectrums were filtered out, which can be an inconvenient process. Try using between 20 and 40 watts of mixed blue light per 1000 watts of regular light. I have done only initial experimentation with this so test this in a limited way first. I suspect that the additional light is an efficient way of increasing total yield"


"Aside from red and blue light, plants also use orange light for photosynthesis. I haven’t experimented with them yet, but orange LEDs might also help increase yield and probably can be lit continuously, just like the blues. More on this as the news breaks—or at least, as it fractures.

Hmmm, I will try this with the blue spectrum next round and see what happens. Interesting find. He has also said something similar about using IR for a few mins right as the lights go off.

This is similar to my next experiment. I can give you a very brief rundown of the concept.

Plant flowering is regulated by the ratio of pf to pfr. Red at about 660 converts pf into pfr, while far red around 740 destroys pfr and turns it into pf.

It is possible to run 740nm light at night to destroy the days build up of pfr. What this reslts in is a large amount of pf in the plant at night, end result is you can run a short night period since the plant thinks it's getting a full night as without far red pfr deterrorates slowly over the night. The longer the night the less pfr when dawn comes, this tells the plant which season it's in.

Anyway that's veery cool about the supplementation of specific light without messing up the photo chrome. This is why I want more small cabs like my sig, i really want to test out more of this stuff as it happens. My first test will be a 10 hour day 2 hour night using 740nm to shorten the night.

That would be awesome if you could Puff. The trick would be to find the perfect blue spectrum, but if your experiment resulted in a 5 to 10% increase, people gotta pay attention to that.

Yup read that part about the IR and thought "karr". That and realizing that maybe a grower can turn on certain IR wavelengths a little earlier and certain ones on a little later everyday, fooling the plant over time and thus being able to increase your lights on period. Then you just time it so that your 18/6 or 20/4 by the last two weeks of your grow. That would be incredible! Or hermie central. :)

i meant to try a blue reptile bulb to keeps the temp up at night (suppose to be a moon effect for the reptiles), I never used it, I didnt want to fuck things up... maybe next time around! it makes sense, plants arnt in complete darkness in nature...

^ try to get a spectrum graph for the blue light. anything that gets into the red near 660 will prevent flowering, if what hes saying is true then you should be fine.


I have seen limited experimentation with blue during the night to prevent stretching, i wonder how the orange will pan out.

If and when someone tries this they should update this thread, if you are all subscribed. I recently have moved in full spectrum lights that I have turning on and off during the day to imitate a "sun" in my room. Results are great so far, I was just hoping that someone may have already attempted to add in a "moon" for night light and supplementation. I was going to buy a 14 watt all blue ebay panel to mount where my green work light is. Really cannabis only has a few days of it's growing season set to 12-12 outdoors, why shouldn't we be able to find the right hormonal triggers to induce flowering at our discretion? Just some thoughts.
