This is a grow journal is really only for personal preferences, but you can post if you want.. im comparing a couple grow mediums for growth, how fast the media dries out, and anything else that I notice. Really comparing to see what I like best.
the set up I have is a hidden one that has a black blanket around it to block light from getting out and has Mylar on 2 of the 4 walls for reflectivity and the other two walls are painted white so I didn't bother to put more Mylar in as I didn't have much. Average temps are 80-85 during the day and 70ish at night and high humidity is about 50-60% and lows hit about 15%
the lights I’m using is a 4 bulb (2') t5ho fixture with veg bulbs. I’m using a timer on the lights to have them going for 18/6 since they will eventually be hardened off to go outdoors.
I use RO water that on average comes out at 5-15 ppm and for this grow I’m going to be only using two nutrients, calimagic (sometimes I refer to as cal mag although it’s general hydo's formula) I chose GH because https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?threadid=223053 and I will be using dyna gro foliage pro 9-3-6 for the food. Also will be applying as foliar spray too!
I’m using a DIY co2 method of mixing 6 cups water, 3/4 cup sugar and some yeast (about a teaspoon or two)
the containers I’m using are these small white foam cups that are about 1 cup in volume and are my choice as floor space in my set up is limited and I have other plants growing at the moment as well.
The strain I’m using is KC-33 from KC brains out of Holland, they were normal seeds purchased through Herbies and are good outdoor strain for my climate. the seeds started germination 3/27 using paper towel method, seeds popped one day apart each (transplanted all seeds into their media 3/31)
(plant one) miracle gro was purchased from local plant nursery, it’s their normal potting soil. it cost me $10 for 2 cubic feet (50 liters or so) it looks like it could use some perlite, but I chose not to add any for this test (if miracle gro proves to be the better of the 3 grows than I’ll do a test of miracle grow with and without perlite and possibly mg with perlite at 25% vs 50% or something) the seed I transplanted into this one was the medium sized taproot that popped second.
(plant two) the coco I got was from a friend that had too much for his grow and just gave it to me, I rinsed it till the run off went from 300ppm to about 50ish and then let it dry and then added cal mag water at 250ppm to account for the CEC. The seed I planted in this one was the biggest and first to pop, the taproot was longest and the seed shell seemed to be ready to come off in a day or so.
(Plant 3) the perlite I used is a small or medium grade of perlite from feri-loom. I mixed one cup of perlite with 3 cups of coco and used a cup of this mix and 3 cups of the mix are on stand-by. before I transplanted the germinated seed that was the smallest of the 3 into this, I decided that I was afraid the fragile taproot would be too prone to damage by touching any perlite that would dry out the root so I stuck my finger down into the mix and filled the hole with coco and then poked a smaller hole with a nail into the coco center and put the seed in it so it’ll have time to develop a bit before it hits any perlite.
for transplanting the seeds into their medias, I saturated them with a mix of 230ppm cal mag and 180ppm dg foliar to make a total of 420ppm (haha) and let them sit in the small grow chamber.
